Bengaluru police have imposed curfew in 16 police station areas, a day after one person was killed and another injured in police firing in Karnataka as the Cauvery water sharing row with Tamil Nadu turned violent, escalating tensions between the two states.

As Bengaluru witnessed widespread violence bringing it on the edge, curfew was imposed in 16 police station limits.

Police said Rajgopal Nagar, Kamakshipalya, Vijaynagar, Byatarayanpura Kengeri, Magadi Road, Rajajinagar, RR Nagara, KP Agrahara Chandra layout, Yeshwanathapura, Mahalakshmi layout, Peenya, RMC Yard, Nandini Layout and Jnanabharathi are under curfew.

Following the ongoing unrest, central forces have been deployed to assist the city police to maintain law and order.

The central forces include Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Railway Protection Force.

The Bengaluru Police said the situation in the city is is totally calm, adding strict action would be taken against vandals or miscreants.

The police said as many as 15,000 police men and officers have been deployed all over the city and around 270 Hoysala vehicles are deployed which act like police outposts.

Widespread violence erupted in Bangaluru and some other parts of Karnataka, while sporadic trouble was witnessed in Tamil Nadu following Supreme Court's modified order on sharing Cauvery water by the two riparian states.

In the backdrop of violence in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka over the Cauvery water issue, the city police here today issued advisory to TV channels asking them not to air visuals pertaining to the violence, which may potentially create law and order problem here. "It has been brought to the notice of the Authorised Officer under The Cable TV Networks ( Regulation) Act 1995, that visuals having huge potential for inciting mob violence which relate to the ongoing violence in Bangalore (Bengaluru) city are being transmitted/retransmitted through the Cable TV Networks in Hyderabad city," the police said in a statement.

In the wake of the prevailing situation in Bengaluru due to the Cauvery water issue, domestic airlines including national carrier Air India today announced waiving off flight cancellation/ rescheduling charges for some of their flights for a specified period. Air India said it would not charge any fee for cancellation of a ticket or rescheduling of its flights to and from Bengaluru and Hubli upto September 16. "On account of disturbance, Air India waives applicable penalties of re-issuance, date change, no-show, cancellation & refund charges for travel from/to BLR & HBX for both dom & intl flts,on all tkts issued on/before Sept 13th '16 for trvl on Sept 13th '16," Air India tweeted.

The city police today cautioned against circulating "false information" on social media on the Cauvery issue and warned of appropriate legal action against offenders. Police said it has come to notice in the last two days that some "miscreants" were attempting to promote enmity and hatred with an intention to incite violence, by "posting false information in the social media relating to incidents in Karnataka over the Cauvery issue".

One more person died of injuries he suffered while escaping police lathicharge, as sporadic protests were today reported in the city, where an uneasy calm prevailed, and other parts of Karnataka, a day after Bengaluru was rocked by violence over the raging Cauvery water sharing row with Tamil Nadu. The toll in the Cauvery stir related violence rose to two with a 30-year old man, who had jumped in panic from a three- storey building while trying to escape police lathicharge, succumbed to multiple injuries this afternoon.

'Pained' PM Modi says restraint, mutual dialogue only solution to Cauvery dispute

A pained Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to display sensitivity and appealed for restraint and mutual dialogue as he felt this was the only solution to resolving the Cauvery water dispute.

"Dear brothers and sisters, the situation that has emerged in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as a fallout of the issue of distribution of the waters of the Cauvery River, is distressful. I am personally pained at the developments. Violence cannot provide a solution to any problem. In a democracy, solutions are found through restraint and mutual dialogue," Prime Minister Modi said in a statement.

Bengaluru violence: AirAsia allows passengers to reschedule

Low-cost carrier AirAsia has said passengers of their flights departing from Kempegowda International Airport on September 13 can reschedule their travel at no charge due to logistical difficulties that they may face in getting to the airport following the outbreak of violence over the Cauvery issue.

"AirAsia understands the seriousness of the current situation in Bengaluru. All AirAsia guests booked onto flights departing from Bengaluru on Tuesday, 13th September 2016 can reschedule their travel at no charge," the aircraft carrier said in a statement here. (PTI)
