Pune youngsters will visit classics with breakfast films

Puneites love films. While film buffs eagerly wait for the latest films, there’s a whole section of film lovers who take great interest in classics.

To engage this section of audiences, a bunch of 20- somethings have come up with a novel idea to revive the classic cinema culture in the city on the big screen.

They call their idea breakfast films, whereby Puneites can watch hit classics in the theatre in the mornings at reasonable rates. Suniket Gandhi, Vishal Kakade and Maulik Desai who are also short film-makers have founded a club called Pvt Talkies through which they are bringing back films from the 60s to 90s. The first such screening will happen in the last week of January.

Suniket Gandhi a founder member of Pvt Talkies says, “While doing research for a short-film festival, we got the feedback that those above 30 years are very keen to watch these evergreen films in theatre.”

The idea is all set to present a whole new experience for film lovers. “We are planning to screen an entire season dedicated to a genre, a film-maker or actor. There will be the 60s of Raj Kapoor, 70s of Dev Anand, 80s of Amitabh and 90s of Khans,” says Kakade.

The ticket rates would be Rs40 and Rs50. “We are in talks with other theatre owners as well. If we go in for open air theatres or multiplexes, the ticket rates will vary according to the venue. Initially, we will screen the films on weekends.”

To watch the classic films, one can to log on to their website
http://www.pvttalkies.com and see details of the films that will be screened.

“The best part is the viewers can also vote and select the old classics they would like to watch,” says Gandhi.
