Bhupendra Mishra could had never imagined that a routine train journey from college to home could change his life. In 2008, the BSc student was commuting on his regular route when he noticed a man lying on the railway tracks.

Mishra, a resident of Boisar, did not fear for his life and jumped out of the train to save the life of a stranger. It was this daring act that earned him the Indira Gandhi National Best National Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteer Award for 2011-12.

On Monday, President Pranab Mukherjee conferred Bhupendra with the Indira Gandhi National Best National Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteer Award for 2011-12 in New Delhi. The award is conferred by Union Ministry of Youth affairs.

He was among 30 youths from across India who bagged the honour for their work under the NSS.

He had been conferred with the best NSS volunteer by the Maharashtra Government and the University of Mumbai as well. On his way to the city, Mishra told DNA over phone, “It’s a proud moment. I am happy for my college, teachers and university.”  Mishra is currently doing MSc (Animal Physiology) at Bhawan’s College in Andheri.

Mishra belongs to a very humble lower middle class family with him being the youngest of the five siblings. Mishra’s father is a retired security man and mother a homemaker. In 2009, Mishra had saved a life of a road victim.

An active NSS member, he has also assisted police in assembly and gram panchayat elections in the very same year. Currently, he is involved in AIDS awareness campaign and is also training village boys for selection in the police service.

One student from Pune and another from Nagpur too received this award.
