Match over
0.0 : Having not won a series here in a decade India will look to change that record. They now have their own 10-year challenge. Kohli vs Kane is going to be Fire vs Ice. It's almost set-up for the top order to decide the games for both teams. New Zealand have a pacy attack and that will surely test the shaky Indian middle order. For the hosts, their main examination will be to see out the Indian spinners. It will be interesting to see what combinations do the teams go for. Toss and team news not far
WEATHER - First up in New Zealand, one looks at the skies. Sunil Gavaskar laments, India's luck in this country has been such that they always get cloudy skies and green tracks. However, today, Sunny is smiling because it is nice and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky.
TOSS time. The necessary people are out in the middle. Heads is the call from Kohli but it is a Tail. NEW ZEALAND OPT TO BAT FIRST.
New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson, says that it looks a very good surface and usually stays the same throughout. Admits that India are usually a very good chasing side but he wants to focus on his own side's strength. Informs that they are going in with one spinner with Mitchell Santner making a comeback. Adds further that the team combination is more due to balance. Wants to keep improving in all aspects but particularly stresses on the fielding part, which was not the best against the Lanka
Indian captain, Virat Kohli, says that Indian bowlers have played a bigger role than the batsmen in the last 12-18 months but do not get enough credit because it has become a batsman's game. People want to see more of fours and sixes, he adds. Stresses that his side is very balanced, confident and relaxed, knowing its abilities well. Is expecting a rough contest, that too in the right spirit. Adds that there is mutual respect between the two sides, so here will be competition along with fun. On
PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull says that Napier has not hosted an international game for more than 2 years. Feels that the grass has been rolled nicely and we should have plenty of runs. Expects at least 340 for the side batting first to win.
Time for the national anthems. India's first up...
The anthems are done and we are ready for the game to begin. Let us have a stat to start. This is India's 1600TH INTERNATIONAL GAME - third most after Australia (1854) and England (1833). Out come the players. Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are the openers for New Zealand. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start off with the first new ball. Guppy to face. Here we go...
0.1 : B Kumar to M Guptill, Full and around off, watchfully defended.
0.2 : B Kumar to M Guptill, FOUR! Wonderful timing. Bhuvi drifts on the pads and the length is a bit too full. Guptill flicks it uppishly but wide of the fielder at short mid-wicket. In fact, it is through square leg and the ball races away. Fine leg has no chance. First runs of the match.
0.3 : B Kumar to M Guptill, Outside off, gentle outswing, left alone.
0.4 : B Kumar to M Guptill, Down the leg side again, flicked away once more but this time fine leg has been placed much squarer. He is moved to long leg and hence, it is just a single.
0.5 : B Kumar to C Munro, On middle and leg, watchfully patted back to the bowler.
0.6 : B Kumar to C Munro, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. Exclude that boundary ball and it is a wonderful start from Bhuvi.
Mohammad Shami to bowl from the other end. He is just one wicket from 100 ODI wickets.
1.1 : M Shami to M Guptill, On a good length, on middle and leg. Guptill tucks it away on the on side.
1.2 : M Shami to M Guptill, Similar length on middle and off. Martin strides forward to block it but gets an inside edge onto his pads. Shami appeals but it dies down.
1.3 : M Shami to M Guptill, Long appeal this time and a confident one but the umpire stays put. Inswinging length ball on off, comes back in. Guptill offers no shot and gets rapped on the pads. India don't opt for a review. Look's like height was the only issue there.
1.4 : M Shami to M Guptill, Outside off, swinging away Guptill leaves it alone.
1.5 : M Shami to M Guptill, OUT! Shami strikes! Becomes the fastest to 100 ODI wickets for India. Sets up Guptill perfectly. Inswing, outswing and now another ball moving away. On a good length around off. Moves away a tad. Martin looks to play it on the off side but gets a faint edge and onto the stumps. The lights flash and India are up in celebration. Martin Guptill is a huge wicket. Shami goes past Irfan Pathan to fastest Indian to 100 wickets who took it in 59 games. This is Shami's 56th ODI

2.4 : B Kumar to C Munro, FOUR! That is a terrific shot! The timing is excellent. The length is not all that bad, fractionally short of a good length but Munro just lifts his right leg up and plays a Nataraja pull shot through mid-wicket!
2.5 : B Kumar to C Munro, FOUR! That is Munro's area. Full and outside off, Munro goes over mid off and clears the fielder comfortably. Almost clears the ropes.
2.6 : B Kumar to C Munro, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.

4.1 : B Kumar to K Williamson, Around off, Williamson runs it down to third man to give Ross the strike.
4.2 : B Kumar to R Taylor, On that good length again targeting the off stump. Taylor pushes it back towards the bowler.
4.3 : B Kumar to R Taylor, Fuller this time outside off, Taylor is happy to defend it.
4.4 : B Kumar to R Taylor, Peach! Length on a good length. Moves away after pitching. Taylor feels for it and almost gets his outside edge. India are right on the money.
4.5 : B Kumar to R Taylor, Serves this full now on off, Taylor on-drives it to mid on for nothing.
4.6 : B Kumar to R Taylor, In line of the stumps, Taylor turns his bat to the on side. Just one run from the over. Terrific from Bhuvi. Finding his line after being slightly wayward in his first.

5.2 : M Shami to K Williamson, Similar line and length, this time Kane taps it to backward point.
5.3 : M Shami to K Williamson, Angles this from over the wicket into Williamson who defends it with a straight bat.
5.4 : M Shami to K Williamson, JUST SHORT! That would have been a third for Shami. Pitches it up and changes his length. Serves this wider and invites Williamson for the drive. Kane reaches for it and uppishly drives it to Kohli at point. The Indian skipper dives forward but it falls just short of him.
5.5 : M Shami to K Williamson, Test him with a bounce now. Williamson ducks to evade it. 5 dot balls.

7.5 : M Shami to R Taylor, Chance but a fumble! On off, Taylor with soft hands pushes it towards mid-wicket and hares to complete the run. Rayudu there looks to collect it with his weaker arm but fails to do so. Would have been tight had he hit.

Is that a run out? Will be a freakish way to get out if Rosco is gone...
11.1 : V Shankar to K Williamson, SAFE! Taylor is well in. Many batsmen get out these days in such fashion. Full and around off, Williamson gets forward and across and drives it straight back. Shankar looks to stop it with a bend in his follow through and the ball deflects off his hands behind. Hits the stumps and India appeal confidently. 13.1 : V Shankar to R Taylor, FOUR! That is a superb shot. Simply superb. Tell you why. The ball is short and Taylor unfurls the cut shot. What is so superb about that, you ask? Alright. Let me give you some talking points first. Twice or thrice in a row, Rosco was connecting the cut shot but straight to the fielder. So now, he adjusts. Cuts the ball hard, into the ground close to him so powerfully that it bounces over the leaping point fielder and races to the fence. Small adjustments sometimes

Beautifully flighted outside off, Taylor comes forward to push but cannot keep it down. The ball dips onto the bowler who does well to take it inches above the ground. Fabulous catch. Usually, Chahal struggles to take such stuff but not today.
Tom Latham walks in at number 5, replacing Taylor.

Has Chahal got his second caught and bowled? He is claiming it but Latham ain't going anywhere. The umpires refer it upstairs with the soft signal as OUT.
18.5 : Y Chahal to Tom Latham, OUT! Oh dear me... do not stop the press. Would rather say, do not open the press today at all. Chahal has his second and guess what, both are caught and bowled. Another stinger. Full and around middle, Latham tries to do what he attempted on the previous ball, a chip down the ground. But this time, he hits it straight back to the bowler. Chahal lunges forward and takes it inches above the turf again (reference is to the Taylor wicket). He throws the ball up in the

32.6 : Y Chahal to D Bracewell, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
DRINKS. India continue to do well on a track which does not seem to have too much for the bowlers. The wickets have fallen plainly due to consistent dogged bowling, not giving too much room. That sustained pressure has resulted in some shots being played out of frustration and eventually, wickets have fallen. 17 overs left and it does look a tall ask for the home side to bat out those. However, should Williamson stay till the end, 250 is a possibility. Whether that will be enough or not is a dif
33.1 : K Yadav to K Williamson, OUT! Caught in the deep! Williamson is gone and with that, the chances of a 250 or even a competitive score are gone too, one would think. First wicket for Kuldeep and he has got the trump card. The break has done the trick for the Indians. Beautifully tossed up around off, Williamson takes the gamble of going after the chinaman. The idea might have been wrong at this stage with not many wickets left. And it turns out to be a bad gamble. The skipper mistimes it and
0.0 : Tim Southee walks in at number 9, replacing his captain.
33.2 : K Yadav to D Bracewell, Full and around middle, almost pushed back to the bowler.

33.4 : K Yadav to D Bracewell, Full and around off, pushed back to the bowler.
33.5 : K Yadav to D Bracewell, OUT! Chopped on! Second wicket in the over and now, the Kiwis might not even see Powerplay 3. The googly outside off, short in length, Bracewell goes back to cut but does not pick the length or the line. Is too far from the ball and only gets a thick inside edge back onto the stumps.
Lockie Ferguson comes in at number 10, replacing Bracewell.
33.6 : K Yadav to L Ferguson, Huge, huge shout for LBW! Turned down! Kuldeep is on his haunches. Nearly had his third in this over. The googly again, around leg, Lockie had no idea about this as he looked to defend. Missed the line and was hit on the pads. The umpire though, gave no thought to the appeal. Hawk Eye shows it to be dead plumb.

34.5 : Y Chahal to Tim Southee, DROPPED! That is a very casual effort. Shikhar Dhawan is the fielder. Full and around off, Southee looks to go inside out but finds Dhawan to perfection at wide long off. The fielder gets to his left, barely has to move but plonks it down. A single taken.
34.6 : Y Chahal to L Ferguson, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
35.1 : K Yadav to Tim Southee, Leg spin on off, driven to long off for a single.
0.0 : Stumping appeal! Is Ferguson out of his crease?
35.2 : K Yadav to L Ferguson, OUT! MS Dhoni, enough said! Fligthed ball on off, spins away from Ferguson who comes ahead to push it to the off side. Gets beaten for the turn and Dhoni quickly does what he does best. Takes off the bails and then puts in an appeal. The umpire takes it up and replays show us that there is Ferguson has nothing behind the line. On the line is not good enough and Lockie has to walk. Ninth one down for the Kiwis.
Trent Boult is the last man in.
35.3 : K Yadav to T Boult, Boult has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
35.4 : K Yadav to T Boult, Gets behind the ball and bunts this one out.
35.5 : K Yadav to T Boult, Boult paddles this away towards fine leg and gets to the other end.
Another stumping appeal. Is this the end of the innings?
35.6 : K Yadav to Tim Southee, NOT OUT! Boult is lucky! Just has something behind behind the line. Trent doesn't read the wrong 'un and gets beaten. Dhoni takes the bails off and puts in another appeal. The umpire refers is up but Boult is lucky to have something behind the line.
36.1 : Y Chahal to T Boult, Full and around off, pushed back to the bowler.
36.2 : Y Chahal to T Boult, Oh dear... jumps down the track, is nowhere near the pitch of the ball but then goes back to defend.

37.1 : K Yadav to Tim Southee, Full and outside off, the googly, Southee lunges to drive but is beaten.

37.4 : K Yadav to Tim Southee, Full and outside off, driven straight to cover.
37.5 : K Yadav to Tim Southee, Dabs this behind point for a run.
37.6 : K Yadav to T Boult, OUT! Edged to first slip. The innings is done. The googly outside off, Boult pushes at it, does not pick the line and gets a thick outside edge. Simple catch for Rohit Sharma. NEW ZEALAND GET BOWLED OUT FOR 157!
India will come out to bat for around 30 minutes. A poor batting performance from New Zealand on a good batting strip. Even Kuldeep Yadav says the same as here he is, giving an interview.
Kuldeep says the ground size is small on one side. Mentions that him and Chahal just stick to the basics and get the success for it. Feels that it's a proper batting wicket and that 160-plus is chaseable. Reckons that these games are important for all three departments, keeping the upcoming World Cup in mind. Adds that there is support everywhere in the world for their side and it's amazing to see.
Guess Kuldeep has described it to perfection. On a batting wicket, where Simon Doull said that anything under 340 is not enough, the Kiwis are around 200 short. And none of the dismissals can be said due to the wicket. In fact, it has been skillful bowling.
India did the basics right, keeping the run flow tight. Shami got the ball to move around and the Kiwi openers were out in a jiffy. There was a bit of a stand between Taylor and Williamson but once the former was dismissed, the home side barely recovered. Kane Williamson fought hard but it was a lonely battle.

So the players finally take the Dinner break as India are surely on top of this game. New Zealand would have hoped for a couple of wickets before the break but Sharma and Dhawan have seen out the opening 9 overs. Boult and Southee did bowl well at the start but India were happy to just see them out. As time went by, Dhawan looked at ease.
Earlier on, Shami started the destruction of the Kiwi batsmen while Kuldeep and Chahal continued to torment the line-up. Williamson's gritty fifty ensured that the hosts got past the 150-run mark. Still not over for the Black Caps. If they manage to get some quick wickets post the interval, things could happen, you never know. Join us in a while for the remainder of the chase.

10.1 : L Ferguson to S Dhawan, Wide! Angling down the leg side, wide signalled by the umpire.
0.0 : So, this is... strange. We have a halt in play due to the sun bearing down directly on the batsman's eyes. The umpires talk amongst themselves and decide to stop play for some time. The players are off the field.
Both the umpires, Shaun Haig and Shaun George, were caught to get updates on the situations. They say the sun was not only hampering the batsman, but also the fielders as it was directly coming into their eyes. They also go on to mention that they have an extra 30 minutes, and play should resume in that time, so we should have a full 50-over game.
Here's an interesting fact about this ground - Usually, grounds have the playing surface facing North-South, but McLean Park has it facing East-West. Hence, this issue.
The sun has set, the conditions are better and we are ready to begin again. Dhawan to take strike, with Kohli at the other end. Ferguson to continue with his remaining over.

11.5 : D Bracewell to S Dhawan, Dropped! Difficult chance though. Back of a length delivery on the stumps, Dhawan rocks back and pulls. It goes off the top edge and balloons towards the leg side. 14.3 : L Ferguson to V Kohli, Outside off on a good length, shaping away, run down to third man for just the one.
14.4 : L Ferguson to S Dhawan, Full toss just outside off, Dhawan hits it to mid off and takes off. Taylor collects the ball and fires a poor throw at the keeper's end. He isn't able to collect cleanly and this allows the batsmen to steal another run.

As easy as it gets! After some wonderful bowling, India back it up with good batting and win the first match of the series. Dhawan and Rohit played Powerplay 1 well enough. The players then had to stop play because the 'sun' was disturbing them. After they came back, Rohit fell but Kohli anchored the innings well and didn't allow the Black Caps a sniff. The Indian skipper missed out on a fifty but Dhawan went on and scored his 50 taking India to victory alongside Rayudu handing India a big 8-wic
The Kiwi bowlers were good but didn't have enough runs to play with. Ferguson and Bracewell got a wicket each but that was all about it. You cannot win a match if you have 157 on the board and not take the opposition all out. Earlier on, Shami, Kuldeep and Chahal restricted New Zealand to a paltry 157. Stay tuned for the post match presentation.

On the comparison of the pitches between Australia and New Zealand, Shami says they are

On the 12-day break before this game, Williamson says that sometimes long breaks help, sometimes they don't but does not want to cite it as an excuse. Flatly says that the Black Caps did not adjust to the c
Victorious Indian captain, Virat Kohli, says that when he lost the toss, he felt that about 300 par was coming. Praises the bowlers for restricting the Kiwis and adds that one could not have asked for anything better. Stresses that the entire fast bowling group believes that they can knock any side over and on Shami, reckons that this is the fittest he has seen him. On the pitch, Kohli says that it got slower in the second half of the innings. Credits the wrist spinners for varying their pace an
That is all we have for you from this first ODI. A convincing win in the end for India but they cannot afford to relax. New Zealand are know for their comebacks.
