| A really good first session for the Kiwis and they have just the one man to thank and that is Tim Southee! There were 4 wickets taken and all 4 have fallen to him. The hosts would have thought of something over 400 when the day started but the visitors now have a big chance to keep them under that. An exciting first session and the game is nicely poised. |
| India will be slightly disappointed with how things went about in the first session. They lost Ravindra Jadeja early and Wriddhiman Saha also did not last for long. Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer did steady things. The latter got to his ton on debut but fell soon after that. India once again lost wickets in pair as Axar Patel followed the centurion. Ashwin though has batted really well and India will hope he along with the tail can take them close to 400. |

| So the Kiwis have made quick work of the two wickets which were remaining after the break! Also, they have managed to keep India under 350 but we still feel, this is a really good score and India are still ahead in the game. |
| Just the one batter for India made most of the start he got and that was the debutant, Shreyas Iyer. He was the star with a bat and scored a brilliant ton. His partnership along with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a half ton got India out of trouble after they were in a spot of bother at 145 for 4. They entered Day 2 eyeing 400 now wickets at regular intervals have seen them fall well short. Still, they have a good score on the board. |
| The New Zealand bowling was all about the two pacers, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson. It was the latter who impressed on Day 1 and the former on Day 2. Southee though was the star with a fifer and it was because of him they have kept India intact. Had they got support from the spinners, they could have well kept India under 300. Williamson will not be pleased with the overall effort but surely will be happy with what they have managed to do on Day 2. |
| Now, New Zealand will have to bat well, the wicket has started to play tricks and one believes it is only going to get tougher. They will need a good start if they are to get close to India's total. Remember, they are batting last so they can't give away a big lead. India on the other hand, will hope to get as big as a lead possible. |
