BIG NEWS - MS Dhoni is down with fever and won't be playing tonight. Suresh Raina will be leading Chennai.
Pitch report - Daren Ganga is inspecting the surface and he starts by mentioning that this is the same deck where Bangalore got all out for 70 and Hyderabad made 175 in the last game which was later chased down by Chennai. Adds that they have done well as a batting unit and just need to do the process right. Confirms that MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja are not well, and Faf du Plessis is not playing. Mitchell Santner, Dhruv Shorey and Murali Vijay are the replacements.
Mumbai skipper, Rohit Sharma says that they would have chased as well because of the dew in the second half of the game. Adds that they now have to post the score that they can defend. 8.6 : I Tahir to E Lewis, Played to the point region by the batsman. They pick up a single. 14 from the over, 28 in the last two.
Strategic Break! Good going from Mumbai in spite of losing Quinton de Kock early. Rohit Sharma has looked in fine touch and Evin Lewis is also finding his range now. Chennai would hope to dislodge this stand quickly as it can hurt them really bad. Here comes Dwayne Bravo into the attack.
9.1 : D Bravo to E Lewis, Bravo starts with a length delivery wide outside off, Lewis shoulders his arms to this one.
9.2 : D Bravo to E Lewis, On a good length on off, Lewis pushes it back towards the bowler.

Mitchell Santner is into the attack now, replacing Imran Tahir.

10.3 : M Santner to R Sharma, Floated delivery on off, Sharma plays it to point.

10.5 : M Santner to R Sharma, A low full toss on middle, Sharma pushes it back to the bowler. It brushes his hands and deflects towards mid on. They cross as the bowler himself runs and collects the ball.
10.6 : M Santner to E Lewis, Flatter and shorter on middle, turning back in, Lewis goes back and punches it down to long on for one. 8 from Santner's first over.
11.1 : D Bravo to E Lewis, Attempted slower one by Bravo but he fails to execute it well. He ends up delivering a low dipping full toss on middle and Lewis almost at the last minute turns it in front of square leg. A single is taken.
11.2 : D Bravo to R Sharma, On a length on middle, Sharma plays it towards mid on for a run.
11.3 : D Bravo to E Lewis, On a length and outside off, Lewis plays it towards covers for a run.
11.4 : D Bravo to R Sharma, Big inside edge! A length ball around off, angling back in, Rohit tries to heave it over the leg side but gets a thick inside edge onto the pads. Could have easily dragged it on.
11.5 : D Bravo to R Sharma, FOUR! Well played! Short in length and outside off, Rohit quietly waits on the back foot and at the last moment ramps it down to third man for a boundary.
11.6 : D Bravo to R Sharma, Terrific delivery. Plants his yorker right in the slot, Sharma cannot do much and just digs it back to the bowler.
12.1 : M Santner to E Lewis, OUT! Lewis holes out! Nothing much wrong in the shot selection but the West Indian fails to middle it properly. Flighted delivery, landing full on middle, this one is right in the slot and Evin decides to heave it over the leg side. But it catches the inner half of his bat and flies straight down to Dwayne Bravo at deep mid-wicket. The 75-run stand is broken and Chennai would like to build on this.
0.0 : Krunal Pandya is in next, probably to maintain the left-right combination.
12.2 : M Santner to R Sharma, Tries playing the inside-out shot but fails to middle his shot. It takes the leading half of his blade and rolls to mid off.
12.3 : M Santner to R Sharma, Sharma has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
12.4 : M Santner to R Sharma, Maiden fifty for Rohit Sharma this season, 35th overall. He reaches there with a single through covers. The Mumbai skipper would target to make it big!
12.5 : M Santner to K Pandya, Krunal has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
12.6 : M Santner to K Pandya, Walks down the track and forces it through square leg for one. Top over from the Kiwi, two runs and a wicket from it!
Imran Tahir returns.
13.1 : I Tahir to K Pandya, OUT! Krunal holes out now! 2 wickets in the space of 7 balls. Identical to the fashion in which Lewis got out. Full and around off, Pandya gets down to slog sweep but does not middle it properly. Mitchell Santner is waiting for it at deep mid-wicket and all of a sudden Mumbai are in trouble...
0.0 : Hardik Pandya walks in.
13.2 : I Tahir to R Sharma, Around off, worked through mid-wicket for a single.
13.3 : I Tahir to H Pandya, Full and outside off, pushed through mid off for a run.
13.4 : I Tahir to R Sharma, Outside off, punched towards cover.
13.5 : I Tahir to R Sharma, Full and outside off, watchfully pushed back to the bowler.
13.6 : I Tahir to R Sharma, Around off, pushed back to the bowler again.
Strategic break. Mumbai were going great guns but all of a sudden they have encountered a roadblock. Two wickets in quick succession and Chennai have got an opening here. They would try to build on this and limit Mumbai to as much as possible. But the presence of Rohit and Hardik in the middle along with the intimidating sight of Kieron Pollard sitting in the dugout will be bothering them. Let's see how the innings ends...
14.1 : M Santner to H Pandya, Quicker and fuller on the pads, Hardik tries to flick but closes the face of the bat early. It takes the leading edge and rolls to short third man.
14.2 : M Santner to H Pandya, Beauty of a delivery! Floated delivery, full and on middle, turning away sharply, Pandya tries his best to defend but it curls past the outside edge. There is definitely some spin on offer.
14.3 : M Santner to H Pandya, Beaten again! This one is wide outside off, Pandya reaches out for it to play the cover drive but fails to meet the ball. It once again spins past his blade.
14.4 : M Santner to H Pandya, Finally connects. It's been driven superbly through the covers. One run added to the total.
14.5 : M Santner to R Sharma, Flighted on off, Rohit has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
14.6 : M Santner to R Sharma, Loopy and on off, Sharma drives it through extra cover for a run. 105/3 with five overs to go, can Mumbai add another 70-75 from here?
15.1 : I Tahir to R Sharma, FOUR! A good attempt in the deep by Shorey but to no avail. A long hop on middle and off, Rohit gets back and pulls it to deep mid-wicket. Shorey runs across to his right in the deep, puts in a dive but fails to pull it back.
0.0 : Rohit is not happy with his bat. Matthew Hayden reckons that with the death overs approaching, the skipper might be looking to go in for a lighter bat.
15.2 : I Tahir to R Sharma, FOUR! Two in two for Rohit! Tahir alters his length and goes too full this time. It's flat and on middle, Sharma takes his front leg forward and heaves it over mid-wicket. This time Shorey sprints across to his left but fails to keep it inside the rope.
15.3 : I Tahir to R Sharma, Oohhh...nearly deceived the batsman there. Sharma is early into the charge and Tahir senses that. He shortens his length and serves it outside off. Sharma adjusts well to play it out safely towards short third man for a run.
15.4 : I Tahir to H Pandya, Forces a full ball back to the bowler and Tahir does really well to stop it in his followthrough.
15.5 : I Tahir to H Pandya, The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single.
15.6 : I Tahir to R Sharma, SIX! Make it a 16-run over from Tahir. Tossed up ball on middle, Rohit kneels and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket. Shorey in the deep tries his best to jump and catch it but the ball sails over his head.
16.1 : M Santner to H Pandya, Flatter and shorter, Pandya punches it down to long on for a run.
16.2 : M Santner to R Sharma, OUT! Body blow to Mumbai, Rohit Sharma is dismissed. Santner follows the batsman down the leg side with a flat and full delivery, Sharma aims to go downtown but fails to generate enough power or timing behind his shot. Murali Vijay in the deep at long on takes the simplest of catches. A fine knock by the Mumbai skipper but he would have liked to bat till the end.
Kieron Pollard arrives. Suresh Raina has employed two slips for the big man.
16.3 : M Santner to K Pollard, Edgy! Tossed up ball around middle and off, Pollard pushes inside the line and gets it away off the outside half. It rolls wide of second slip.
16.4 : M Santner to K Pollard, Fullish and on off, driven back to the bowler.
16.5 : M Santner to K Pollard, Pollard has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
16.6 : M Santner to K Pollard, Beaten! Spinning away from the batsman, Kieron winds up for a big shot, probably over the bowler's head but misses. Rayudu collects the ball and appeals but nothing from the umpire. The keeper looks at his skipper standing at second slip who takes it jokingly and turns down the offer. Santner has bowled out with exceptional figures, 4-0-13-2!
Dwayne Bravo is back on. 2-0-12-0 so far.
17.1 : D Bravo to H Pandya, The score reads 123/4! Slower and fuller outside off, it's driven through mid off for a run.
17.2 : D Bravo to K Pollard, Beaten comprehensively. A slower delivery outside off, Kieron walks across the stumps to play at it but is early into his shot. It beats the inside edge and rolls behind. Bravo and Pollard exchange stares. A friendly one.
17.3 : D Bravo to K Pollard, Driven through the covers by the batsman. One run added to the total.
17.4 : D Bravo to H Pandya, Wide! Slower one but way wide outside off, it's a yorker, Pandya allows it through.
D Bravo to H Pandya, On a length and outside off, it's whacked to deep cover-point for a couple of runs.
17.5 : D Bravo to H Pandya, Driven through mid off by the batsman. They pick up a single.
17.6 : D Bravo to K Pollard, A yorker wide outside off, just inside the tramline, Pollard allows it through. 6 from the over, a good one at this stage particularly.
Deepak Chahar returns. 3-0-36-1 so far.
18.1 : D Chahar to H Pandya, Pandya plays a pull shot to this short delivery. They manage to come back for the second.
18.2 : D Chahar to H Pandya, IN THE AIR... SAFE! Slower delivery deceives the batsman. It's on the shorter side outside off, Hardik stands back to play the pull shot but it takes the top edge and flies towards mid off. Raina puts in a sprint from extra cover but it falls wide of him. The Chennai skipper rolls over the ball and seems to have hurt himself. He is in some pain but then recovers quickly. One run has been added to the total.
18.3 : D Chahar to K Pollard, FOUR! Not in control but still a boundary. Chahar delivers a short ball again, on the slower side, Pollard drags his pull shot behind square leg and there is no protection in the deep.
18.4 : D Chahar to K Pollard, Full and sliding down the leg side, Pollard tries to flick but misses. It goes off his pads to square leg and they cross a couple of times. Given as runs. Maybe, some bat involved.
18.5 : D Chahar to K Pollard, Short in length on off, slower in pace, Pollard pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a run.
18.6 : D Chahar to H Pandya, Left alone thinking it to be a wide? Short in length and wide outside off, Hardik allows it through. Only 10 from the over given the caliber of batsmen in the middle. Chennai would take it.
19.1 : D Bravo to K Pollard, FOUR! Boom! Bravo delivers it slower and fuller outside off, Pollard throws all his power behind his shot and spanks it over the bowler's head for a boundary.
19.2 : D Bravo to K Pollard, Bravo eyes the yorker but ends up slipping a low full toss outside off, Pollard strokes it down to long off for a run.
19.3 : D Bravo to H Pandya, Smartly bowled. Bravo sees the batsman moving across on the off side and bowls it fullish and wide outside off. Hardik swings his bat at it but it goes underneath.
19.4 : D Bravo to H Pandya, FOUR! Yet another boundary down the ground. Bravo misses his mark and it's a low full toss around off, Hardik gives it the full whack of his bat and smacks it down the ground for a boundary.
19.5 : D Bravo to H Pandya, SIX! This one has disappeared! Slower delivery again from Bravo but it's on a fuller length outside off, Pandya shows his muscle power there as he deposits it over long on for a biggie. 150 up for Mumbai.
19.6 : D Bravo to H Pandya, Too full in length and outside off, Pandya squeezes it out through point for a couple of runs. Mumbai end on 155/4!
Exceptional bowling at the death by Chennai to restrict Mumbai to a par score. A very underwhelming finish for the touring team. They were going superbly in the Powerplay and were in a decent position at the halfway mark. But then, Evin Lewis and Krunal Pandya departed in quick succession and that was soon followed by the wicket of Rohit Sharma, who struck his maiden fifty this season. Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard did try hard but failed to give the kind of finish they usually do.
This pitch is tailor-made for spinners. Harbhajan Singh was very tidy at the start while Mitchell Santner choked Mumbai in the middle overs. Imran Tahir had an off day along with Deepak Chahar but the efforts of the Turbanator and the Kiwi meant that the yellow team didn't lose too much ground. Here is Santner giving an interview to Michael Slater...
Mitchell Santner admits that it is very hot and humid. Reckons that Mumbai have got a pretty competitive total but also hopes that Chennai chase it down. Is happy with the fact that the pitch turned, given that they do not turn much in New Zealand. On his limited opportunities this season, Mitchell puts it down to the quality of the squad and puts his belief in doing the basic things right and making the best of every chance. On Dhoni's fitness, MS says that captain MS has a bit of a stiff back
Right then, a target in excess of 150 on a turning deck is always dicey. Mumbai also possess quality in their spin department and their pacers cannot be ignored as well. Chennai, minus Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni, have to bat really well to scale down this target and avoid their first loss at home. A riveting chase coming up shortly, don't go too far away...
