Match over
0.0 : Hello and welcome, folks! The big tour is about to get underway. India have travelled Down Under to lock horns against Australia and the showdown begins with the shortest format of the game at the Gabba. These two teams have always had a fierce history in their rivalry. The situation is a lot different now though, especially with Australian cricket. They are under new leadership now under Aaron Finch, who is not shy to state that his side is on the brink of turning it around.
India are a side which is on the up. Despite their upset in England, they put up strong performances to give them a run for their money. And post that, were dominant in the Asia Cup and at home against the Windies. Their two months overseas now on this island country will provide a stern challenge, so it will be interesting to see how they go. Australia in Australia are never easy, and this new side is at its best in the T20 format, so we're sure to have a good contest on our hands.
PITCH REPORT - Brett Lee observes that there is a nice covering of grass. Not many cracks visible and the surface looks rock hard. Adds that the white ball should fly through. Opines that the conditions seem to be a little bit swirly which will make the ball talk.
TOSS - India win the toss and opt to bowl first!
Indian captain, Virat Kohli says it looks like a hard track with a decent amount of grass on it. Wants to figure out what areas are good to hit as they haven't had much time to practice here, so bowling first will be good to figure that out. Adds that times haven't been too busy for them so far as it's been a bit chilled out, but they need to switch on now. States that both teams know each others' strengths and weaknesses so it will be a good contest.
Australian captain, Aaron Finch says he would have liked to bowl first as well but doesn't mind batting first and putting runs on the board. Feels like they play against Indian players all the time due to the Indian T20 League. On team changes, he informs that Adam Zampa comes in for Nathan Coulter-Nile from their last game against South Africa.
Jasprit Bumrah is on the sidelines with Adam Gilchrist. The Indian pacer says that the wicket looks good as there's some pace and bounce. Reckons it's always fun to play in a place where cricket is so exciting. Feels that he is settling in this new place which is his main focus right now. Adds that he forgets about the past and focuses on the game at hand. On his action, he mentions he used to play a lot of tennis ball cricket so the yorkers were common, but as he's started playing more Test cri
The Indian team is out in a huddle by the boundary line. Some motivational words from skipper Kohli before his players spread out across the field. Aaron Finch and D'Arcy Short will open for the Aussies, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl to the latter. A couple of slips in place. Here we go...
0.1 : B Kumar to D Short, Slightly short of a length and on the pads to start, Short plays it to mid-wicket.
0.2 : B Kumar to D Short, Beaten! This one is outside off on a length and slightly shapes away to beat the outside edge of Short, who wants to feel the ball.
0.3 : B Kumar to D Short, Just on top of off stump, good line by Kumar. Short defends it off the back foot.
0.4 : B Kumar to D Short, Full and on the pads this time, Short flicks it away straight to the fielder at short mid-wicket.
0.5 : B Kumar to D Short, Short goes for the huge one above the bowler but misses the ball completely. This one was fuller and outside off and moves away after landing. 5 dots in a row!
0.6 : B Kumar to D Short, Short and Australia are off the mark as the left-hander flicks it away off the back foot in front of square on the leg side for a single. The square leg fielder went back for the last ball of the over. If he was in his place inside the ring, would have been a straightforward catch for him.
Jasprit Bumrah to bowl from the other end. Two slips in position for him as well.
1.1 : J Bumrah to D Short, Good length ball on the off stump, Short wants to play it on the leg side but the ball takes the inner half of the bat and rolls back to the bowler.
1.2 : J Bumrah to D Short, Same length and slightly outside off, Short flicks it to the left of mid on and picks up a single.
1.3 : J Bumrah to A Finch, Good ball to Finch first up, comes in after landing! Finch wants to defend but gets the leading edge to short cover.

2.3 : B Kumar to A Finch, Similar delivery and Finch is watchful as he defends this with a straight bat.
2.4 : B Kumar to A Finch, Short of a length on off and Finch pulls it away behind square on the leg side for a couple as Krunal comes around. Long square boundaries here at the 'Gabba.

3.1 : J Bumrah to A Finch, DROPPED! This one was a half volley outside off and Finch smashes it in the air straight to Kohli at cover. The ball goes too fast to him and the captain can't hold on. The batsmen run through for a single.
3.2 : J Bumrah to D Short, Short flicks this one to square leg for a single.
3.3 : J Bumrah to A Finch, FOUR! Overpitched on middle, Finch powers this through mid on. Khaleel Ahmed dives to his left but in vain. Finch looks in good touch here!
3.4 : J Bumrah to A Finch, FOUR! Second consecutive one. This ball was short of a length and Finch tries to play it with a straight bat but the ball takes the inside edge and runs towards the fine leg fence. Short fine leg can't stop it.
3.5 : J Bumrah to A Finch, On a length and outside off, Finch misses as he goes for swipe over mid off.
3.6 : J Bumrah to A Finch, Good pace here from Bumrah, outside off and on a length. Finch runs it down fine to third man and comes back for the second. Good running this! 12 runs with a dropped catch came from that over. Australia getting a move-on.
Khaleel Ahmed is into the attack.
4.1 : K Ahmed to D Short, OUT! Khaleel strikes first ball! Excellent catch by Kuldeep as D'Arcy's short stay at the crease is over. A length ball, around off, Short looks to go over the top but hits it very high in the air. Gets plenty of height but not that much distance. In fact, he cannot get it past mid on. Kuldeep Yadav runs back a touch, keeps his eyes on the ball and takes a very good catch. Big wicket for India as Short can really strike them long but in hindsight, it might be a blessing
0.0 : Chris Lynn is in at no.3.
4.2 : K Ahmed to A Finch, Full and outside off, Finch looks to drives this one but gets the inside edge that rolls onto the vacant leg side toward square leg for a single.
4.3 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, FOUR! Off the mark straightaway, this one is full and outside off. Lynn powers it away through cover and to the boundary. Went like a rocket!

4.5 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, Flicked away in front of square leg for a single and gives the strike to his skipper.
4.6 : K Ahmed to A Finch, Good length and at the hips this time. Finch plays it away to deep square leg for a run to end the over. A successful one for India.
5.1 : B Kumar to A Finch, FOUR! Too straight in line and Bhuvi pays the price for it. Full and angling in on the pads, Finch just clips this fine down the leg side. Short fine leg is in place, but he has no chance of stopping it.
5.2 : B Kumar to A Finch, Fuller length ball on off, driven back down the ground towards mid on for a quick single.
5.3 : B Kumar to C Lynn, Just behind a length, close to off, Lynn stands his ground and swings, only to miss.
5.4 : B Kumar to C Lynn, Good bowling from Kumar here, just outside off. Slows down the pace on this occasion and Lynn can just defend it straight back to him.
5.5 : B Kumar to C Lynn, Pulls away this short one powerfully but straight to the deep mid-wicket fielder. Just a single.
5.6 : B Kumar to A Finch, Good ball to end the over, Finch remains on the back foot and drops it towards mid-wicket for a run. 38 runs and 1 wicket off the Powerplay.
Kuldeep Yadav to roll his arm over now.
6.1 : K Yadav to A Finch, Starts off with a full toss on middle, Finch sweeps it to deep square leg for a single.
6.2 : K Yadav to C Lynn, Flatter and darted in quickly on the pads, Lynn flicks it away for another single.
6.3 : K Yadav to A Finch, Full toss again outside off, Finch drives it to long off for a run.
6.4 : K Yadav to C Lynn, Looped up on middle, Lynn removes his front foot out of the way and drives to long on for a single.
6.5 : K Yadav to A Finch, Loud appeal from Kuldeep for an LBW. This one doesn't spin at all and would've gone on to miss off stump. The ball was full and landed on middle. Finch who was trying to sweep again, misses it completely and gets rapped on the front pad. Rohit, at slip suggests that the ball would've missed the stumps and India decide not to go upstairs. Anyways, the impact also seemed to be outside off.
6.6 : K Yadav to A Finch, Full and on middle again, Finch works it away between square leg and fine leg for a single.
Khaleel Ahmed to have a change of ends.
7.1 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, SIX! That's a big hit. Well, was just over the rope, but the boundaries here are extremely big. Back of a length on the stumps, Lynn stays on the back foot and muscles the pull over mid-wicket for the first maximum of the game.
7.2 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, On the shorter side of the length, in line of the stumps, Lynn swings across the line but fails to connect.
7.3 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, Helps the pull behind square leg for a couple of runs.
7.4 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, SIX! That's outta here! He's absolutely nailed that. What a hit. Shortish in length and into the body, Lynn backs away a touch and launches it high and handsome over square leg for a biggie.
7.5 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, SIX! Two in two! Lynn-sanity on the cards this evening? Could very well be. He looks to be in fine touch here. Full and right in the slot, Lynn throws his front leg out of the way and bangs it over long on.
7.6 : K Ahmed to C Lynn, Back of a length around off, slapped through to sweeper cover for one. 21 runs off the over, Australia are flying now.
8.1 : K Yadav to C Lynn, Slower one and outside off, Lynn just plays it away calmly towards cover point and takes a single.
8.2 : K Yadav to A Finch, This one is quick and aimed just outside off, Finch goes to reverse sweep this one and misses it. Gets hit on the pad but impact is outside off.
8.3 : K Yadav to A Finch, OUT! This time the line is outside off and flighted. Finch comes down the ground and looks to hoick it out of the ground but only manages to get an outside edge that loops up to Khaleel at short third man. India will be really happy to see the back of the Aussie skipper as he was looking really good and set to make it count. The ball seemed like a wrong 'un and replays confirm it. Finch doesn't read it and perishes for 27. The partnership of 40 off 26 balls comes to an e
Glenn Maxwell walks into the middle next. Time for the Big Show to entertain?
8.4 : K Yadav to G Maxwell, Half volley outside off, Maxwell drills it through covers and gets off the mark with a couple of runs.
8.5 : K Yadav to G Maxwell, Loopy and full, on middle and leg, pushed back down the ground towards mid off for one.
8.6 : K Yadav to C Lynn, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
Krunal Pandya is now into the attack.
9.1 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Looped up on off stump, Maxwell defends it watchfully.

9.3 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Flatter and darted at the pads, Maxwell drops it down towards short fine leg for a run.
9.4 : K Pandya to C Lynn, MASSIVE! Lynn seems to be in the mood today! He dances down the wicket to this looped up ball on middle and lofts it over long on and into the sightscreen. Moves onto 36 in no time.
9.5 : K Pandya to C Lynn, This one is flatter and just outside off, Lynn covers the drift on the ball and plays it back safely off the back foot to cover.
9.6 : K Pandya to C Lynn, Shorter and outside off, punched away to deep extra cover to retain strike.
10.1 : K Yadav to C Lynn, OUT! GOT 'EM! Kuldeep strikes. A rather soft dismissal in the end, but a big wicket nonetheless. The in-form Lynn departs. 11.3 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Short and wide outside off, cracked through towards sweeper cover for a double.
11.4 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Works it away with a closed face to mid-wicket for one this time.
Review taken. Marcus Stoinis has been given out leg before, so he's decided to take it upstairs.
11.5 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, NOT OUT! Stoinis survives! Great review by Australia! The ball was short and pitched around middle, Stoinis goes for the reverse sweep and misses the ball to get hit on the thigh pad. The umpire thinks about it and raises his finger. Stoinis decides to go upstairs after consulting Maxwell. The Ball Tracker shows the ball to be going above the stumps.
11.6 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, Short, flat and darted on off, Stoinis goes on the back foot and punches it towards long on. Single taken to end the over.
Khaleel Ahmed back into the attack. He's been expensive so far, can he turn things around?
12.1 : K Ahmed to M Stoinis, Wide down the leg side, No trouble at all for the batsman. The umpire signals a wide.
K Ahmed to M Stoinis, Huge mix-up between the batsmen but Maxwell survives. Short and outside off, Stoinis drops it down towards backward point. Maxwell runs through while his partner is ball-watching. Rahul throws it towards the non-striker's end but misses the stumps. Khaleel can't come around in time either. Huge chance missed by the Indians.
12.2 : K Ahmed to M Stoinis, The batsman has punched the ball off the back foot.
12.3 : K Ahmed to M Stoinis, FOUR! Short ball from Khaleel, Stoinis picks the length up, stays on the back foot and pulls it over mid-wicket. Big boundary out there, nobody in the deep either. The ball rolls across the fence.
12.4 : K Ahmed to M Stoinis, Banged in short but it's too short, wide called.
K Ahmed to M Stoinis, A misfield from Kohli allows the batsmen to take an extra run. Stoinis works it in front of square leg and the batsmen take two. Kohli hares to the ball from mid-wicket but lets it through. Three taken in total.
12.5 : K Ahmed to G Maxwell, Taps it away towards cover-point for one.
12.6 : K Ahmed to M Stoinis, FOUR! BANG! Full ball on the stumps, Stoinis smacks it straight back down the ground for a boundary.
13.1 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Full toss on middle, Maxwell slogs it but can't connect well. Gets the inside half of the bat towards mid-wicket and picks up a couple.
13.2 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, SIX! Huge one over cow corner! This one is short and darted in on off stump, Maxwell rocks back and smashes it for a maximum.
13.3 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, SIX! He's really taking off now. Seems to have got his eye in. Straighter one on off, the Big Show stands firm inside the crease and slogs it over wide long on for a maximum.
13.4 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, SIX! Another one. A hat-trick of maximums, for the second time in this innings. Fuller in line of the stumps, Maxwell once again smokes it over the long on boundary for half a dozen. Still 2 balls left.
13.5 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Full toss on the pads, Maxwell flicks it away to deep square leg for another couple. Krunal in the line of fire now and looks under pressure. 50-run partnership up between these two! Handy stand for the Aussies.
13.6 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Full and on middle, Maxwell pushes it down the ground and gets a single to keep the strike. 23 runs off this over and 37 off the last two!

15.1 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, SIX! Poor ball and Krunal has been punished. Short ball angling in, Stoinis with all his power heaves it flat over mid-wicket. Maximum!
15.2 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, Slaps this pull towards wide long on. Dhawan there moves to his right, slides and stops the ball. Two taken by the batsmen.
15.3 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, Respite for Krunal. Good ball outside off and just inside the tram line. Stoinis lets it go thinking it would be a wide but it's just inside. Dot ball!
15.4 : K Pandya to M Stoinis, Pushed away in the air but safe towards long on. Maxwell comes back on strike.
15.5 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, SIX! This one is a high full toss on middle and Maxwell smashes it over deep square leg for a huge one. The ball was so high that it could've been called no ball as well but the leg umpire decides against it. Krunal just wants to get through his over as soon as possible and is bowling poor deliveries in the process.
Dead ball. Maxwell will consider himself lucky. He skied one but the ball hit the spider cam. Was mostly likely going to be a catch down the ground either to long on or long off.
15.6 : K Pandya to G Maxwell, Fuller and quicker on middle, Maxwell hits in the air, in the gap between mid on and deep mid-wicket. The Aussie batsmen come back for the second. Krunal finishes with figures of 0-55 which is the most expensive for a spinner in Australia in T20Is.
Jasprit Bumrah comes back on.
16.1 : J Bumrah to M Stoinis, Dropped! That's the second catch dropped off Bumrah's bowling. Another simple catch. Short ball outside off, Stoinis cuts it aerially towards Khaleel at third man. He moves a little to his right, tries to gobble it up but it slips right through. Oh, dear! That's poor. A single is taken.
So the forecast has finally come true. It's raining down and the players are asked to walk off the field. PLAY HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED DUE TO RAIN! This break probably came at the right time for the Indians. Australia have their noses ahead as things stand. Finch and Lynn were blazing away, a couple of wickets fell in quick succession but then Maxwell and Stoinis went on the charge. Their partnership is of 78 off just 36 balls. There have been a couple of easy chances dropped, which could
Update 1934 local - Good news is that the rain has stopped. Bad is that the outfield seems to have taken a serious beating. Let's see when play can be resumed. A minimum of 30 minutes from the looks of it.
Update 1940 local - The drizzle has started again. The covers are back on.
Update 1955 local - The rain has stopped and play will resume in 10 minutes. The match has been reduced to 17 overs, so Australia will have 5 balls to face before the end of the innings.
We are back. The Indians have taken their positions. It will be Maxwell on strike to Bumrah who will finish the 5 balls remaining in the over.
16.2 : J Bumrah to G Maxwell, OUT! Bumrah gets Maxi again! A wicket for India straight after the break. A length ball, around middle, the Big Show tries to heave across the line but cannot get it past square leg. Straight to Bhuvneshwar who takes a good catch. No fifty for Maxwell as Bumrah has picked him up for the sixth time in T20Is. Kohli may have missed a trick by not bringing him on earlier.
Ben McDermott is the new man in.
16.3 : J Bumrah to Ben McDermott, A high full toss, the new man hits it over the bowler, down the ground for a couple.
16.4 : J Bumrah to Ben McDermott, Outside off, a swing and a miss.
16.5 : J Bumrah to Ben McDermott, Another slower ball, outside off, Ben is early into his pull but misses. The batsmen sneak in a bye.
16.6 : J Bumrah to M Stoinis, Full and outside off, pushed through mid on for a couple. AUSTRALIA FINISH ON 158/4!
That is a decent total posted by Australia. They started slowly but then a couple of chances gifted by the Indians allowed them to recover. The first three overs saw only 12 runs but then slowly, the runs started to come.
Finally Lynn-sanity was there to be seen. He finally played big, clobbering Khaleel for three successive sixes but India came back with the wickets of Finch and Lynn in quick succession. Then, they cam across the Maxi storm.
The visitors could have kept things quiet had Rahul not missed a simple run out chance of Maxwell - but what happened next was a big show from the Big Show as he got stuck into Krunal Pandya for a hat-trick of sixes. He got a good hand from his Victorian teammate, Marcus Stoinis as Australia were heading for a massive total.
It was during the 17th over when the heavens opened up. The Aussies were heading for a score of probably around 180-190, possibly even 200 but the rain break halted all their momentum. They managed just 5 runs in 5 balls post the rain break and the REVISED DLS TARGET FOR INDIA IS 174 IN 17 OVERS.
When 3 out of your 5 bowlers do well, normally, you say that it is a good bowling effort. But not in a T20I. Here, even one bad outing for a bowler spoils all the good work done. Factor this - Bhuvi, Bumrah and Kuldeep had combined figures of 10-0-60-3 while Khaleel and Krunal went for 7-0-97-1. Ouch.
174 to win with an in-form batting line-up against a threatening but a not-so-in-form bowling attack. Should be fun. Stay tuned...
0.0 : We're back for the run chase. The Australian team is in a last minute huddle before taking the field. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan walk out to the centre now. It's a stiff target in front of the Men in Blue. Let's see how they begin. The hosts are beginning with the pace of Jason Behrendorff. A slip in place. Here we go...
0.1 : J Behrendorff to R Sharma, Off the mark first ball! Jason delivers a full length ball on middle, Rohit walks forward and across before flicking it in front of square leg. Right through the gap between two fielders present there and they take three runs.
0.2 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, FOUR! Dhawan is off the mark in a blazing way! Fractionally overpitched ball outside off, Dhawan leans forward and cracks his drive through the gap at covers for a boundary.
0.3 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Fine delivery! This one cuts back into the batsman from a length around off, Dhawan fails to work it around and is hit on the thigh pad.
0.4 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, EDGY FOUR! It doesn't matter how they come as long as they come! An inswinger from Behrendorff, around off and nipping back in, Dhawan without any footwork pushes at it tamely and gets an inside edge past the stumps to the fine leg fence.
0.5 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Play and a miss! No footwork again. Back of a length delivery outside off, Dhawan stays back to play through the line but is beaten.
0.6 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Beaten once more! Jason angles in a good length delivery around off, Dhawan pokes inside the line from the crease and misses. 11 from the first over!
Billy Stanlake to bowl fire from the other end. Watch out for his pace.
1.1 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, On a good length around off, Rohit stays back inside the crease and blocks.
1.2 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, An 88 mph delivery, a touch short and around off, Rohit runs it down wide of backward point for one.
1.3 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, Drama! Given a wide by the umpire, a late call. A bouncer down the leg side by Billy, at 90 mph, Dhawan decides to take it on and swings his bat at it. There seems no connection as Carey jumps to collects the ball with his one hand. Stanlake appeals, the keeper joins later but nothing from the umpire. Now, he turns to signal the wide. Waited a bit to see whether they were going for the DRS. Hmm... Daylight in the replays.
B Stanlake to S Dhawan, A front foot push down the ground but straight to mid off.
1.4 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, FOUR! Bang! Width on offer outside off, Dhawan latches onto the room and spanks it past the backward point fielder for a cracking boundary.
1.5 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, Taps a length ball in the vacant region on the off side and scampers across to the other end. Maxwell charges towards the ball from point, slides to take the ball but misses.
1.6 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, Sharma has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
2.1 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Beaten! Good length delivery outside off, Dhawan tries playing at it but is beaten for pace.
2.2 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, FOUR! What a shot! Dhawan gives the charge to a length ball around off and then easily lifts it over mid off for a boundary. Superb footwork!
2.3 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Fine stop! A good length delivery angling back into the batsman, slightly off pace too, Shikhar waits for it inside the crease and then at the last moment guides it wide of first slip. Stanlake runs across to his right at third man and puts in a dive to save a certain boundary. Two added to the total.
2.4 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, A mishit, just over mid on! Dhawan tries to play it with the angle of the bowler, aims to go over mid-wicket but closes the face of the bat early. It catches the leading half of his blade and loops over mid on. Couple taken.
2.5 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Short and wide outside off, played straight to point from the crease.
2.6 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Good length ball angling into the batsman, Dhawan turns it in front of square leg for a run.
3.1 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, FOUR! Well played! Stanlake digs in a 137 kph short delivery on middle and it nicely sits up for Dhawan. He stays back to get on top of the bounce and pulls it handsomely in front of square leg for a boundary.
3.2 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, Bowls a length delivery around off, angling away, Dhawan chops it down past first slip to third man and rotates the strike.
3.3 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, Full length delivery on middle, at 142 kph, Rohit gets forward and defends it to the leg side.
3.4 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, Aerial but safe! Not often you see Rohit attempting these shots early in his innings. A sharp delivery, on a back of a length delivery outside off, Rohit walks across the stumps with the attempted paddle shot but it catches the higher part of his willow. Flies just over short fine leg and they collect a couple.
3.5 : B Stanlake to R Sharma, Once again in the air... drops short! Stanlake bangs in another short delivery and Rohit pulls it across the line. Fails to control his shot though but luckily for him it falls in front of McDermott, running in from fine leg. One run added to the total.
3.6 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, Shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
4.1 : J Behrendorff to R Sharma, OUT! Gone! Massive breakthrough for Australia. Behrendorff comes up with the goods. He delivers a length ball in line of the stumps and Rohit walks forward and across to flick it over the leg side. But he fails to middle his shot properly and it balloons in the air towards mid on. Aaron Finch runs back to take the catch, fumbles once but then sticks it near his chest. An ordinary first innings on this tour for Rohit. He never got going and struggled to come to ter
0.0 : Lokesh Rahul comes in at number 3 but he will not be on strike as the batsmen crossed.
4.2 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, A short ball outside off, extra bounce, flayed over point towards third man for a single.
4.3 : J Behrendorff to L Rahul, Back of a length delivery on middle, Rahul jumps a bit and taps it down to mid-wicket for a run.
4.4 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Remains on the back foot to a short ball and punches it straight to the cover fielder.
4.5 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, FOUR! Excellent shot! Jason digs in a short delivery around middle and leg, Dhawan uses the angle smartly and pulls it with authority. It flies from the middle of the bat, over short fine leg and nearly goes all the way.
4.6 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Width on offer outside off, Dhawan packs a punch but fails to pierce the gap on the off side. Straight to the cover fielder. End of the Powerplay, a decent beginning for both sides.
Andrew Tye comes in now. Australia will hope he ties up the Indians. They need some control.
5.1 : A Tye to L Rahul, Full and angling into the batsman, Rahul is on the front foot as he drives it down to long on for a run.
5.2 : A Tye to S Dhawan, In the air... goes on one bounce to third man. Tye bowls it short and wide outside off, a knuckle delivery, Dhawan throws his bat at it but fails to middle his shot. It flies off the outside edge to the fielder in the deep.
5.3 : A Tye to L Rahul, Good running. Rahul stays back to tap a length ball near the surface and calls his partner through for a quick single. Tye tries to kick the ball on the stumps at the striker's end but misses. Wouldn't have mattered anyway.
5.4 : A Tye to S Dhawan, FOUR! What a shot! Dhawan is looking in the mood. Tye bowls it full and wide outside off, Shikhar gives the charge and pumps it over the bowler's head. Once again it nearly goes all the way.
5.5 : A Tye to S Dhawan, FOUR! Dhawan is looking in firm control of his game. Although this was too close for comfort. Tye delivers a shortish ball around off and takes it away with the angle. Dhawan delays his shot to run it fine down to third man but it's too close to the keeper. Carey flies to his left but fails to get to it as the ball races away to the fence. 50 comes up for India in good time!
5.6 : A Tye to S Dhawan, The batsman has driven it through mid off. One run added to the total. 12 from Tye's first over, did everything but tying things up.
First sign of spin. Big moment for Adam Zampa.
6.1 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, Flighted and full ball on middle, Dhawan quietly plays it in the gap at mid-wicket, no one inside the ring in that region and the bowler himself runs there. A single taken.
6.2 : A Zampa to L Rahul, FOUR! Uppish but through the gap. Zampa is on the shorter side with his length, it's around off and Rahul goes deep inside the crease with his square cut. Doesn't middle it properly as it takes outer half of the bat and speeds right through the gap between short third man and backward point.
6.3 : A Zampa to L Rahul, Well done. Got a boundary on the previous ball and this time just nudges his flick shot through mid-wicket. Easy two.
Stumping appeal! Has Rahul come out of the crease? Referred upstairs...
6.4 : A Zampa to L Rahul, Not out! Waste of time, really. Zampa senses the charge from the batsman and sends across a flat and short delivery outside off. Rahul initially comes out of the crease but then seeing the length he gets back to attempt the cut shot. Fails to connect and Carey is quick to take the bails off. He appeals, it's referred upstairs but KL is found to be inside the crease.
6.5 : A Zampa to L Rahul, Played to the point region by the batsman. No run.
6.6 : A Zampa to L Rahul, Flatter and quicker on middle, Rahul moves back inside the crease and punches it down to long on for a run. 8 from leggie's first over.
Jason Behrendorff is back on.
7.1 : J Behrendorff to L Rahul, Full and angling away from the batsman, Rahul drives it through covers for a run.
7.2 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, SIX! This one has gone all the way! A typical Dhawan shot! Welcomes the incoming length delivery, moves back inside the crease, makes room, picks up from his pads and hoists it over backward square leg for a biggie. Raises his bat as he thought he has reached his fifty but he's on 49 currently. Facepalm!
7.3 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, 9th T20I fifty for Dhawan, first against Australia! Gives the charge to the bowler and crisply drives it through covers. McDermott in the deep makes a tumbling stop as they cross for a couple of runs. Dhawan raises his bat to acknowledge the applause. A fine knock till now.
7.4 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, FOUR! Dhawan is launching rockets from the crease. Another delivery angling into him, he greets it with full power and smacks it through extra cover for a crunching boundary.
7.5 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, Full and outside off, Dhawan drives but finds the cover fielder this time.
7.6 : J Behrendorff to S Dhawan, FOUR! Behrendorff has been taken to the cleaners in this over, 17 coming off it. Full in length around off, Dhawan leaves the crease as soon has the ball leaves Jason's hand and drills his drive down the ground for a boundary. India are off to a flying start!
Is that a wicket? The LED bails are glowing... Has Rahul hit the stumps? Or has Carey dislodged the bails with his glove?
8.1 : A Zampa to L Rahul, NOT OUT! Carey has flicked the bails. Zampa with a shortish ball around off, Rahul goes deep inside the crease to play the square cut and in the process it seems that he has hit the stumps too. The keeper appeals for a hit-wicket and the square leg umpire takes it upstairs. The replays find that Carey has disturbed the bails without collecting the ball. Given a no ball for that reason. That's a first for me. Free Hit coming up.
A Zampa to L Rahul, Nothing much from the Free Hit. Tossed up ball outside off, Rahul lofts it over extra cover for a couple of runs.
Stumping appeal! Has Carey got Rahul this time? Referred upstairs again...
8.2 : A Zampa to L Rahul, OUT! The foot is on the line and that is not good enough for the batsman! That is a big wicket for Zampa. it will increase his confidence 10-fold. After bowling quickies all this while, he slows this down a touch. Rahul is drawn forward to drive but misses. Carey collects and whips off the bails, appealing as well. It looks close and sure enough, replays show that the foot is on the line when the bails come off.
Virat Kohli comes in now, at number 4, replacing Rahul.
8.3 : A Zampa to V Kohli, Tossed up ball on middle, flicked across the line but straight to mid-wicket.
8.4 : A Zampa to V Kohli, Full and flighted around off, Kohli lunges and defends.
8.5 : A Zampa to V Kohli, Very full this time, on middle, Kohli drives it back firmly and Zampa seems to have get some fingertips on it. The ball travels to long on and the Indian skipper is off the mark with a single.
8.6 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, Probably a googly outside off, Dhawan throws his bat at it and it goes off the outside edge past the keeper. A couple of runs more for India.
Marcus Stoinis into the attack now.
9.1 : M Stoinis to V Kohli, On a length, around middle, helped through mid-wicket for a single. 89 needed from 47 balls now.
9.2 : M Stoinis to S Dhawan, Good stop by Aaron Finch. Dhawan jumps down the track a bit early and on seeing that, Stoinis slows his pace down. Gabbar mistimes his shot over extra cover and Finch seems to have overrun that to his right from long off. Manages to stop it with his left hand. Two runs taken.
9.3 : M Stoinis to S Dhawan, Outside off, quietly played to the off side for a quick run.
9.4 : M Stoinis to V Kohli, Done in by the pace. Or the lack of it. A short ball outside off, Kohli is early into his pull and misses. The ball goes off his body towards backward point and a leg bye is stolen.
9.5 : M Stoinis to S Dhawan, A short ball, another slower one, comfortably pulled through square leg for a run.
9.6 : M Stoinis to V Kohli, WIDE. Another slower bouncer, this time it is too high. Kohli ducks and it is wided.
M Stoinis to V Kohli, Length ball wide outside off, Virat reaches out and slices it towards third man. By the time Billy Stanlake can get to the ball, two runs are taken.
10.1 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, Floated wide outside off, Dhawan looks to drive but misses.
10.2 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, DROPPED! Oh dear... has Zampa put down the match? That should have been taken. Full and around middle, spinning in, Shikhar comes down the track and looks to go over the top but the ball hits the inner half of the bat. Goes straight back to Zampa who is probably not prepared. Seems to have seen it at the last moment. Puts it down.
10.3 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, Comes down the track and blasts it down to long off for a single.
10.4 : A Zampa to V Kohli, Full and around middle, Kohli gets down and looks to play the slog sweep but mistimes it towards square leg.
10.5 : A Zampa to V Kohli, OUT! Ho ho ho! Zampa gets his second! And this is a big one, in the form of the opposition captain. Full and outside off, a touch wide, Kohli comes down the track and looks to go inside-out, his favourite shot. But because the ball is wide, he miscues. There is absolutely no timing on that and it is skewed up straight in the air. Easy catch for Chris Lynn at short third man. The asking rate keeps mounting - 80 needed from 37 balls now.
Rishabh Pant arrives.
10.6 : A Zampa to S Dhawan, Full and outside off, chipped over cover for a brace. Just 3 runs and a wicket from that over - Zampa's figures read 3-0-17-2. Two bowlers can bowl 4 overs - will Zampa be one of those?
Billy Stanlake time again. 78 needed off 36 balls.
11.1 : B Stanlake to R Pant, Down the leg side, helped fine for a single.
11.2 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, SIX! WHACK! This man is batting on a different planet altogether. A short ball, slower in pace, Dhawan swivels and pulls it massively over square leg! 100 UP FOR INDIA! 71 needed from 34 balls.
11.3 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, DROPPED! Another opportunity goes abegging! Neither of the sides have been good on the field tonight. This should have been taken too. A short ball, down the leg side, Dhawan mistimes his pull and it almost goes down the throat of Nathan Coulter-Nile, who is the substitute. However, he picks it up late in the lights and by the time he gets to the ball, it dips onto him and he palms it. Two runs taken.
11.4 : B Stanlake to S Dhawan, OUT! Gone this time! Jeez, that is a pretty cool catch by Jason Behrendorff! Is that the game? Another short ball outside off, Dhawan backs away to the leg side, exposing all his stumps and then tries to ramp the shot over third man. The connection is decent but he gets more height than distance. It seems to be a pretty simple catch for the man at third man but remember, he has the ropes behind him to think about too. Behrendorff does well not to tread on those. Big
Dinesh Karthik, who has made his image of a finisher in the recent past, walks in next. He has a big job in front. Can he deliver?
11.5 : B Stanlake to R Pant, WIDE. A slower bouncer, down the leg side, ducked under.
B Stanlake to R Pant, Down the leg side, very full, Pant misses his flick and loses his footing too. A leg bye taken.
11.6 : B Stanlake to D Karthik, Outside off, dabbed with soft hands past the keeper towards third man for a couple. 13 runs from the Stanlake over but the big wicket of Dhawan in it as well. Gamble works for Finch.
12.1 : A Zampa to R Pant, Full and outside off, driven straight back to the bowler.
12.2 : A Zampa to R Pant, A short ball, down the leg side, Pant looks to pull but misses. The ball hits his pads.
12.3 : A Zampa to R Pant, Has a mighty swing to this one but gets lesser power. Finds the gap though, between long on and mid-wicket and earns a brace.
12.4 : A Zampa to R Pant, Full and outside off, again, Rishabh is looking to go too hard and mistimes his shot to long off for a single.
12.5 : A Zampa to D Karthik, Full and outside off, slogged to deep mid-wicket for a run.
12.6 : A Zampa to R Pant, Good thinking. RP takes a couple of steps down the track and Zampa fires it outside off, that too, a googly. Pant is early into his attempted cover drive and mistimes it towards cover. A run taken. Tremendous finish by Zampa - just 5 runs from his final over - 4-0-22-2.
Billy Stanlake returns. Hang on. Finch is informed by the umpires that Stanlake cannot bowl as only 2 bowlers can bowl 4 overs tonight. Behrendorff and Zampa have already done that. Andrew Tye is given the ball. 1-0-12-0 so far.
13.1 : A Tye to R Pant, SIX! Terrific shot! A loosener to start, full and down the leg side. Pant takes maximum toll, swinging it miles over fine leg! 54 needed from 23 balls now! Pant moves to 11 from 8 deliveries. The stand is worth 15 from 9 balls.
13.2 : A Tye to R Pant, FOUR! Ordinary bowling. Length delivery at this stage, clubbed wide of long on for a boundary.
13.3 : A Tye to R Pant, WIDE. A slower bouncer, outside leg, Rishabh looks to pull but misses. Carey collects and appeals, so does Tye but the umpire patiently waits for the appeals to die down and then calmly signals a wide. 49 needed from 22 balls now.
A Tye to R Pant, Banged in short, pulled to deep mid-wicket for a single.
13.4 : A Tye to D Karthik, Full and outside off, eased through the covers for a brace.
13.5 : A Tye to D Karthik, WIDE! Second one of the over! Pressure on the bowler. Karthik walks across his sticks and Tye bowls it wide outside off. It ends up being too wide outside off.
A Tye to D Karthik, FOUR! Edged away! Full and wide outside off, Karthik slashes hard and gets a thick outside edge, through the vacant slip cordon to the third man fence!
Six or a save? Has Maxi pulled off another stunner? Or has it been too late?
13.6 : A Tye to D Karthik, IT IS A SIX! Great effort from Maxwell, but a little too late. 25 runs from the over and this game is wide open again. 35 needed from the final 3 overs. A high full toss, around off, Dinesh gets down and across and slaps it over wide long on. Like he did against the Proteas, it seems like Glenn Maxwell has taken control of the catch. He is airborne, takes the catch but is out of the boundary. He then tries to throw it in but by the time, he makes contact with the ground
Marcus Stoinis is back into the attack. The equation is quite close. Pressure on him.
14.1 : M Stoinis to R Pant, Full and outside off, Pant reaches out and slogs, slicing it over point for a couple.
14.2 : M Stoinis to R Pant, A short ball, slogged towards long on for a single. There is a poor throw to the keeper, almost goes past short third man, but it is saved.
14.3 : M Stoinis to D Karthik, FOUR! Great shot from Karthik! Walks down the track, goes across and whip-flicks it behind square leg! The fielder runs in to his right in the deep, dives but in vain! 28 needed from 15 deliveries!
14.4 : M Stoinis to D Karthik, Full and wide outside off, pace taken off, Dinesh reaches out to drive but gets a thick outside edge which cannot go past Chris Lynn at short third man. A run taken.
FREE HIT TIME!
14.5 : M Stoinis to R Pant, NO BALL! The ball is wet and is slippery. India will not mind. Problems for Australia. A high full toss, trying to keep Pant in his crease as he comes down the track but is then left alone. It goes past his chest, towards the keeper.
M Stoinis to R Pant, Nothing much on the Free Hit. A length ball outside off, Rishabh is early into his slash and mistimes it towards long off for a run.
14.6 : M Stoinis to D Karthik, 150 UP FOR INDIA! 24 needed from 2 overs. India's game to lose from here with the Aussies struggling with the wet ball. Short and outside off, DK reaches out and flays it through point for a run. 11 from the over, 36 from the last 2!
15.1 : A Tye to D Karthik, FOUR! WHAM! Early boundary in the over! Full and wide outside off, Karthik walks into the shot and blasts it wide of mid off and cover for a boundary!
15.2 : A Tye to D Karthik, WIDE! 50-RUN STAND IS UP IN JUST 22 BALLS! A potentially match-winning partnership for India. What a counter-punch. It has come at a time when we felt that the game was done and dusted after Dhawan's dismissal. Once again, DK walks well across his stumps and the bowler bowls it wide outside off. 19 needed from 11 now.
A Tye to D Karthik, Works this low full toss through mid-wicket for a run.
15.3 : A Tye to R Pant, OUT! Caught! Against the run of play, Tye gets a wicket. Or rather, Pant has given it away. Absolutely no need for this shot. A low full toss, Rishabh looks to play the reverse paddle but spoons this high in the air. Jason Behrendorff barely has to move an inch as he takes it calmly at point. Big wicket for Australia. The quickfire stand is broken.
Krunal Pandya walks into the pressure cooker situation. 18 needed off 9 balls.
15.4 : A Tye to K Pandya, A good slower bouncer, down the leg side, Pandya is early into the pull and takes his eyes off the ball. Is hit on the helmet and the ball goes towards short fine leg. A leg bye taken.
15.5 : A Tye to D Karthik, A length ball wide outside off, Dinesh slashes but misses.
15.6 : A Tye to D Karthik, FOUR! Crucial boundary! Karthik walks across his stumps again and Tye bowls it full and wide outside off. No problems for Karthik as he clubs it wide of long on for a boundary!
Marcus Stoinis to continue. 13 off 6. This cannot get closer than this. Karthik has shown good form while Stoinis has taken a beating. Krunal will be on strike. Can MS bowl a few dots?
16.1 : M Stoinis to K Pandya, A slower short ball outside off, Pandya mistimes his swing towards long on for a couple. 11 needed from 5 now.
16.2 : M Stoinis to K Pandya, WIDE NOT GIVEN! Is that a harsh call on the batsman? Stoinis smiles. Full toss wide outside off, Krunal reaches out to drive but misses. Replays show that the ball was outside the wide guidelines and Australia seem to have gotten away with that one. 11 needed from 4...
16.3 : M Stoinis to K Pandya, OUT! Caught but this could be a blessing in disguise for India. 11 needed from 3 but it is Dinesh Karthik on strike. A full ball on middle, slower in pace, Pandya swings hard but mistimes it towards long on. Glenn Maxwell comes charging in, dives forward and takes a very good catch. Is pumped up with that. India will not mind it too much. Krunal was struggling. A boundary here and the visitors will be back in the game.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is in next but he will be at the non-striker's end.
16.4 : M Stoinis to D Karthik, OUT! Back-to-back wickets for Stoinis and he is on a hat-trick! Wow. Read that again. Stoinis on a hat-trick. A length ball outside off, again pace taken off, Karthik looks to swat it over the off side but cannot quite clear the man in the deep. Third catch for Jason Behrendorff tonight. Excellent knock from Karthik though. 11 needed from 2 now.
Kuldeep Yadav walks in next.
16.5 : M Stoinis to B Kumar, WIDE. Technically, India are still in it. Bhuvi jumps down the track and Stoinis bowls it short and wide outside off. The batsman cannot reach and it is wided.
M Stoinis to B Kumar, Well, if the last ball is not a wide or a no ball, Australia have this in the bag. A short ball outside off, Kumar mistimes it in the air and even though deep mid-wicket cannot get to it, only a single is taken. 9 needed from the final ball.
16.6 : M Stoinis to K Yadav, FOUR! It will be a boundary but it does not matter. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 4 RUNS (DLS METHOD)! A short ball, in line of the stumps, Kuldeep backs away and pulls it over short fine leg for a boundary, just evading a leaping short fine leg.
A nervy win for Australia. The players are excited and overjoyed but coach Justin Langer looks stern in the dressing room. The Aussies nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. What a thriller in the end.
A game which had plenty of twists and turns. Australia started slowly, but then Lynn, Maxwell and Stoinis were powering the hosts to a big total before the rain came bucketing down. That seemed to take the momentum away from the home side but when the revised DLS target was disclosed, 174 from 17 overs, Australia did seem to have the advantage.
India started gingerly, losing Rohit early but Dhawan kept them in the hunt. He was losing partners at the other end but till he was there in the middle, the visitors were in with a shout. Then came that spell from Adam Zampa - which saw Kohli and Dhawan getting dismissed. At that stage, India needed 69 from 32 balls and it was virtually over. Or not?
Enter Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant. Nothing to lose. The duo had a magnificent partnership of 51 from 23 balls, which revived the game. The 25-run over from Andrew Tye in the 14th opened the game big time but then, the seamer bounced back with the wicket of Pant and Stoinis closed it out in the final over. Too close to call - small moments here and there could have won the game for either side. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
Indian skipper, Virat Kohli says that they always get good support in this part of the world and called it a great atmosphere. Adds that the team enjoyed this game, which was a close one. Admits that it was a see-saw game, with India bowling well initially but then Maxwell and Stoinis bringing the Aussies back. Adds further that they started well with the bat and it seemed like they would win but the Aussies held their nerves. Admits that they fumbled in the middle overs but Rishabh and Karthik
Australian skipper, Aaron Finch says that his boys really fought hard, especially during the middle overs. On his confusion with the allotted quota of overs, Finch smiles and admits that he got confused. Stresses that he was confident that Stoinis would pull it off in the end with 12 to defend and praises him for executing his plans well. On his dropped catch by Kohli, Finch does not read too much into it.
ADAM ZAMPA HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. He's excited with the award says it's a good feeling. Hopes to be more consistent. On Kohli's wicket, Zampa says that it obviously was a big wicket and cherishes it. On dropping Dhawan off his own bowling, Zampa mentions that he was a bit nervy as he played a few shots after that. On Carey's stumping of Rahul, Adam cheekily says that he does not trust Carey behind the stumps in terms of DRS or stumping but here, he was correct.
That is it from the opening T20I between Australia and India at the 'Gabba. The Aussies would have identified plenty of mistakes in this win and have plenty of areas to work around. India, on the other hand, were not far away from being their best in this game and would focus only on improving their fielding, come the next game. Do join us for the second T20I on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 6.50 pm local (0750 GMT) from the MCG. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
