Gender-based violence is prevalent everywhere — from developing countries to developed nations as well. And this video exactly proves that. This girl walked across NYC with a hidden camera clad in a very casual attire. (The reason for mentioning this is because usually, the victim is blamed for the way she dresses. A very common misconception in patrarchial society like India followed by concepts such as slut-shaming)
What followed was a bunch of catcalls, someone trying to get her number while others leering and literally commenting on her appearance in not-so-subtle manner. The video has men from all races (Again worth mentioning because usually the colored people are blamed for crimes by Western media) who stalk her, get too close for comfort and even ask her to be friends with them. The biggest question that follows is — If even developed countries are not able to create a safe environment for women, how will the emerging and developing countries follow suit?
This video is a reminder of our continuous fight against crimes and injustice meted out against women by society and the need for such initiatives to be up-in-arms against violence of any form that takes away the basic rights of women.
