In an unexpected turn of events, the Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump became President-elect of the United States of America after defeating Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton in key states.

Wins in Florida, Ohio, Iowa and North Carolina put Trump in the lead. But wins in New Hampshire, Michigan and Wisconsin, states that were expected to go in Clinton's favour, secured the White House for Trump.

Here is a look at the event that has been at the centre of global media attention on Wednesday— the US Presidential Election 2016.

Donald Trump stunned the world on Tuesday by defeating heavily favored Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path. A wealthy real-estate developer and former reality TV host, Trump rode a wave of anger toward Washington insiders to defeat Clinton, whose gold-plated establishment resume includes stints as a first lady, US Senator and Secretary of State.
