A defiant Donald Trump said Hillary Clinton would go to jail if he were president and attacked her husband for his treatment of women in a vicious presidential debate less than a month before the US election.

The Sunday night debate, the second of three before the November 8 vote, was remarkable for the brutal nature of the exchanges between Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, and Clinton, his Democratic rival. The debate was crammed with moments that could at best be described as petty and at worse vicious - as the candidates traded personal attacks and sarcastic one-liners.

Trump frequently interrupted Clinton and sparred with the two debate moderators, who in turn chastised the crowd for occasional outbursts.

Even though not as decisively as the first Presidential Debate, according to a CNN/ORC poll of debate watchers, Hillary won the debate. with 57% stating that Hillary won while 34% went with Trump.

Here is a look at the second US Presidential Debate as it happened.

The second Presidential Debate was notably 'no holds barred', as neither of the Presidential candidates backed out from insulting each other. When Clinton was asked by the moderator Anderson Cooper if Trump had the discipline to be the President, Clinton replied with one word: "No."

“I'm shocked to hear that,” Trump responded sarcastically.

There was a point in the debate when after 90 minutes of insulting each other  the final question came from an audience member who asked each candidate to describe one admirable quality about the other.

“I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald," Clinton said.

There was a tense moment at the debate when Hillary Clinton was trying to defend herself when Donald Trump spoke about her use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State.

“It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Clinton said of her rival for the Nov. 8 election.

“Because you'd be in jail,” Trump shot back, drawing a mix of gasps and applause from the crowd that was defying instructions to remain silent.

When speaking at the debate, insults were hurled from both both ends.

Trump went so far as to say, "We have a divided nation, because people like her - and believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart.”

Clinton in turn jabbed at Trump for his lewd remarks about women captured on a 2005 videotape released on Friday that has thrown his candidacy into crisis.
