R Ashwin exults after taking a wicket on Day 3 of the 3rd Test

Welcome to Day 3 of the third Test between India and South Africa, at Nagpur. India are on top in this game, having reduced South Africa to 32/2 in the fourth innings after taking a lead of 309.

20 wickets fell on the 2nd day, a record in India. First, South Africa lost 8 first-innings wickets. Then India lost all ten wickets and by stumps, SA were two down again! In fact, the same South African batsmen batted and were out twice on the same day - Stiaan Van Zyl and Imran Tahir.

One must fully expect the match to finish today on this square turner of a wicket. An Indian win is very likely, but stranger things have happened. If India win, South Africa would have lost an away series for the first time in 9 years.

Also, we at dnaindia.com don't think the pitches are of enough quality to warrant an India-South Africa series:

OUT! Even the sheer top edges off AB de Villiers' bat travel a long way. This time however, not long enough. AB tries to hit a fullish ball over long off for six, plays a little early even as the ball spins to off. The ball flies to the long off fence, and Ishant Sharma pulls off a brilliant catch! He was inches from the fence and remained so until the end when he completed the catch running in from a finer position. A man shorter than him though may have found it tough. It's nearly curtains for SA. 118/9.

03:23 PM

OUT! GONE. 7/66 for Ashwin, and the test match is over. India has also won the Test series 2-0 with one to play. Carrom ball. The ball drifts on and snakes through the gap between bat and pad in Morne Morkel's defence, to hit leg stump. He played down the wrong line.

India win by 124 runs, and the series 2-0. They have also ended a 9-year-old South African record - of being unbeaten in away series. Ashwin has 12 for the match and is easily the Man of the Match.

The wickets in this series have been questionable, and SA have simply been done in on traditional Indian tracks. There should be some controversy about that, but for now India will savour the win. It was never in doubt after SA were bowled out for 79 in their first innings in response to India's 215. In hindsight, Amla and du Plessis were only delaying the inevitable.

03:14 PM

OUT! The ninth wicket has gone down. 6 for Ashwin, 11 in the match. Huge turn from leg and middle, Kagiso Rabada's bat finds the edge on the drive and he is caught at gully by Kohli. SA 177/9.

02:59 PM

OUT! JP Duminy is gone, and Ashwin has his 4th wicket. Duminy did not offer a shot to a straight delivery, the ball goes on with the arm and strikes Duminy in front of off and middle. The umpire is quick to raise his finger.

OUT! Dane Vilas falls, Ashwin has five - for the 8th time this year. Vilas gloves a ball outside leg stump into the hands of keeper Saha. 167/8 and Ashwin has a record.

02:11 PM

Oh. Last ball before tea, Mishra turns the ball square from middle and leg and beats Dane Vilas' bat. South Africa go to tea at 151/6. Just 46 runs in the session, but two crucial wickets of Amla and du Plessis that have almost certainly sounded the death knell for SA's hopes.

01:52 PM

OUT! Now Faf du Plessis goes, on 39 as well. Incredulous shot. Tries the pull for some reason, the ball keeps horribly low, and Faf looks ungainly as he is fooled. Bowled. Amit Mishra has taken out the resistance. SA 135/6.

01:42 PM

OUT! Hashim Amla falls! Comes forward to defend a fullish delivery from Mishra, the ball turns away after pitching, and finds the edge of the bat, then the hands of the first slip fielder. Amla out for 39 off a marathon 167 balls. SA 130/5. The partnership has been broken.

01:11 PM

The current pair has batted on at snail's pace, taking the Proteas to 126/4 at drinks. They have played 19 overs after lunch and scored just 21 runs. Both Amla and Faf are yet to reach a fifty. But the duo's partnership is now 68 runs.

While SA may be preserving wickets and probably pushing the game into Day 4, it is difficult to see how they can win the match at such slow pace.

12:35 PM

Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis have continued to resist after lunch, taking the score to 116/4. It's slow going, as just 11 runs have been scored off 8 overs.

11:32 AM

It's lunch on Day 3. South Africa have progressed to 105/4, after being 58/4 at one point. Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis have fought well, though some luck has been involved with a few close shaves. But this is still a huge mountain to climb. 204 more needed. It was still India's session.

11:04 AM

Ishant Sharma is back into the attack, wicketless in the Test match but back for his third spell today. He ends up bowling a probing maiden over to Amla. SA 88/4, just a few overs before lunch.

Still India's session.

10:45 AM

South Africa have rumbled along to 83/4. Hashim Amla is fighting hard, looking to be positive without being overly aggressive. Ishant Sharma has been ridiculously ineffective and taken off twice now.

10:07 AM

OUT! AB de Villiers is gone. Misreads the turn, the ball spins the other way after pitching, and AB is plumb out. Ashwin gets the man. SA 58/4.

09:46 AM

OUT! The third wicket has fallen. D Elgar c Pujara b Ashwin 18. It's been a dismal series for him.
