How do you look back at your career? Fourteen years is a long time…
It has been great to be a tennis player and I’ve won the French Open as well as many other titles. Winning the Davis Cup was another highpoint in my career and I don’t think I haven’t done anything that I didn’t want to do. I’m pretty happy with the way my tennis career has panned out for me and looking back I have no regrets.

You had injury problems. How does it feel to come back?
I haven’t played for almost a year because of injuries and I was really missing tennis. It is great to be back in official competition. I feel pretty confident on court now and it is wonderful to start the year in one of your most favourite venues. I now feel really motivated to carry on with my tennis career.

What are your other plans for 2010?
I’ll be playing in the Australian Open and then I’ll move on to South America and from there I will be going to Miami (Sony Ericsson Open with a singles draw of 96 players). I’ll decide my future course after that.

Football is the most passionate and popular sport in Spain, but how do you manage to have a strong tennis base?
I do agree that football is the No.1 sport in Spain. In fact, I'm a great fan of Barcelona and Mallorca from where I come. Lionel Messi is my favourite player. We have a strong sporting culture in the country and many of the kids want to play tennis too. In fact, we have a good system to groom youngsters and that helps a lot to generate a good crop of players to enter the professional system.

Coming from a cold climate, how do you manage it in Chennai?
I'm used to the climate in Chennai, Spain is pretty cold now. I was in South America in December where it was pretty warm. We get adjusted to different climates during the long course of our Tour.
