India v/s Sri Lanka- Match Updates: Rain virtually washes out day 1 after strong Sri Lankan start
India v/s Sri Lanka: Third Test match, Day 1: Sri Lanka get early breakthrough

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the third test match between India and Sri Lanka to be played in Colombo.

Virat Kohli and his men will be looking to create history as the first Indian team to win a series in Sri Lanka after gap of two decades. Over the years many stalwarts have graced both the teams. Now it is time for the young turks to fill the big shoes. After a shock defeat in Galle having dominated for most of the test match, India recovered well to win the next test match. R Ashwin, Lokesh Rahul and Rahane showed their mettle. But injury woes are plaguing India. Naman Ojha has replaced injured Saha and Pujara has been drafted in place of unfit Vijay.

Sri Lanka has also made three changes. Kusal Perera is making his debut. Tharanga is back in the side in place of retired Sangakkara. Nuwan Pradeep has made the cut too. Jehan Mubarak and Dushmantha Chameera have been excluded from the final 11.

India: Virat Kohli (C), Cheteshwar Pujara, KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Stuart Binny, Naman Ojha, R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav.

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (C), Kaushal Silva, Dimuth Karunaratne, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, Dhammika Prasad, Rangana Herath, Tharindu Kaushal and Nuwan Pradeep

Here's how the action unfolded in the rain interrupted day one of the test match.

Play has been now officially called off. The match will start at 9.45 am tomorrow to make up for lost time.

The pitch will have some moisture tomorrow and Sri Lanka will look to get some early breakthrough to cement their command in this test match. India will have to be wary of the first couple of hours. The TV commentators believe that this is a result pitch and the fact that first day has been virtually been washed off may not have too much impact if we have no more rain.

03:30 PM

Unfortunately it has started to rain again. Any further cricket today looks extremely difficult.

03:08 PM

Match is yet to start though rain has stopped long time ago. A pitch inspection will happen at 3.30 PM. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

12:15 PM

The rain has stopped but the ground is heavily covered. Looks like we are in for a long break here.

11:18 AM

Suddenly a spell of showers and the covers are rushed in. The series has been amazingly free of rain intervals but this looks to be a prolonged break.

India has not really played well today morning after being asked to bat first. Rahane looked steady before missing a full one. Lokesh Rahul was dismissed in only the second ball he faced.

Kohli has already been awarded a life and one of his edges didn't carry to the slips. Pujara too has been shaky and very tentative in his feet movement. Perhaps this break will help the Indians to sort their strategy.

Huge dark clouds on the anvil.

11:12 AM

Spin introduced for the first time. Herath is  bowling to Kohli. Indians will be hoping to rotate the strike to get the innings going. IND-50/2 after 15

11:10 AM

The drinks break nearly worked for Sri Lanka! Healthy edge from Kohli but it just falls short of the slip. Dhammika has been really brilliant this morning. He has managed to put hallowed Indian batting line up under considerable pressure.

11:00 AM

It's drinks time here in Colombo. Sri Lanka definitely has enjoyed the upper hand in the first one hour. Kohli and Pujara are trying to restore the innings. They are being watchful. Sri Lankan bowlers are not giving any freebies to ease the pressure. IND- 40/2 after 12 overs

10:42 AM

Pujara is slowly starting to confident. The feet movement looks much more reassured. He hits Pradeep for a firm straight drive. IND- 39/2  after 10 overs.

10:37 AM

Kohli gets a life! Inside edge off Pradeep's delivery and wicket-keeper fails to latch on to the catch. To add insult to Pradeep's misery, the ball hits the helmet and five runs are added to India's tally! IND- 33/2

10:34 AM

Angelo Mathews comes to bowl and traps Pujara. A confident appeal but fails to impress the umpire. Sri Lankans bowling some very good areas testing the patience of Indian batters. IND- 24/2 after 7

10:32 AM

Close shave for Pujara. Pradeep forces an edge but the ball just falls short of Karunaratne in the slips. Testing time for Indian batsmen.

Virat Kohli is the new man in and India needs a solid partnership at this juncture.

10:17 AM

Pradeep traps Pujara in front. A confident appeal but height was the factor here. Pujara must have had his heart in his mouth. Not great foot movement from Pujara to negotiate the moving ball.

OUT!  A gem of a delivery from Pradeep. Rahane misses a full one and he is adjudged lbw. Rahane was probably expecting the ball in the good length but got flumoxxed by Pradeep.

Sri Lankan bowlers have already justified Mathews' decision to field first. Rahane gone for 8. IND-14/2 after 4 overs.

10:12 AM

Rahane hits another gorgeous straight drive. The bowler looks to be under discomfort. Not a good sign if Dhammika is not able to continue. As of now, he is doing fine. Rahane being watchful and looking to play the balls on its merit.  IND-13/1 after 3 overs.

10:06 AM

Rahane opens his account with a classy straight drive. It will definitely sooth the nerves in the Indian camp. IND-6/1 after 1 over.

10:03 AM

OUT! Ideal start for Sri Lanka. KL Rahul gone in the second ball of the test match. Dhammika Prasad gets a ball to nip back in and KL Rahul just lets it go. The ball goes to hits the stump. IND-2/1

Rahane is the next man in!

09:53 AM

Sri Lanka has won the toss and elected to field first.

Virat Kohli says that he would have also opted to field as it looks like there will be some early assistance for the quick bowlers. However he expressed confidence that his team is good enough to negotiate the first few hours.

Pujara will be opening the innings with Rahul for India.

Sri Lanka will be looking for some early breakthroughs, otherwise they may be in for a long leather hunt.
