India v/s Sri Lanka Match Updates: Virat Kohli's India creates history after 22 years
India v/s Sri Lanka Match Updates: India crush Sri Lanka by 117 runs, win series 2-1

Hello and welcome to the match updates of fifth day of the third test match between India and Sri Lanka played in Colombo.

On Monday, Indian middle and lower order played admirably to stretch the lead upto 385 runs. Rohit Sharma, Mishra, Binny, Ashwin all came to the party to add to Lankan woes. Perera and Dhammika Prasad managed to bowl well for the Islanders but the spinners were nothing short of ordinary. There was some animosity when Dhammika and Ishant had a run-in. Sri Lanka started the day with 7 wickets in hand.

Here's how the action unfolded.

Virat Kohli says feels nice to create history with young players. He also applauds all the guys who were not part of the final 11.

Kohli says it is an important milestone for the young team. Indian captain says that the attitude in the team has been fantastic and that has got reflected in team's performance too.

R Ashwin has been adjudged man of the series. He credits the excellent catching for his rich haul of wickets in this series.

India went from 0-1 down to beat Sri Lanka 2-1.

The entire series was virtually dominated by India except the two sessions at Galle, which cost Kohli's boys the test match.

That's all from us. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Join us for the South Africa's tour to India.

04:00 PM

Cheteshwar Pujara is the man of the match. Many would have preferred Ishant but the fact that Pujara scored a ton in testing wickets probably tilted the scale on his favour. Dream comeback for Pujara.

Angelo Mathews must be a sad man. He played valiantly but his team just fell short and couldn't apply themselves properly.

03:47 PM

Sri Lanka had their moments today specially when Perera and Mathews were playing. But credit to Indian bowlers for sticking to their plans, and not getting rattled.

Finally it would be fair to say that the better team won.

India under new captain Virat Kohli has won an away series after 4 years. In Sri Lanka they have won a test series after an interval of 22 years. An entire golden generation of cricketers couldn't manage the feat, which these young boys under Kohli have done. Sri Lanka though is no longer the team of their past without their greats. It is a team undergoing transition. Still this victory is significant as both the sides fought hard and finally India came out on top. It was a team effort in true sense of the term.

03:45 PM

And it's all over. Mishra gets the last wicket. He traps Pradeep (0) and umpire has no hesitation in promptly raising his finger.

India win the match by 117 runs and seal series 2-1.

03:39 PM

OUT! Dhammika Prasad gone now. Not too sure what he was thinking.  Lasted only 4 balls to score six runs. He holds out to Binny. Ashwin gets his fourth wicket!

SL- 263/9

03:36 PM

OUT! Kohli brings Ashwin and he gets a breakthrough right away! A full delivery and Herath is plumb in front. He departs for 11. SL -257/8

03:30 PM

Tharindu Kaushal is the new batsman in. Herath looking pretty positive. He hits Yadav for two consecutive boundaries.

Ishant on the other hand is trying to rely on short balls dismiss the Sri Lankan tail. Can Sri Lanka resist this Indian onslaught?  Sri Lanka -257/7

03:22 PM

India has taken the second new ball straight after tea. Ishant Sharma is bowling.

OUT! And Kohli's decision has worked instantly. Ishant Sharma traps Angelo Mathews in front. Huge appeal and the umpire raises the dreaded finger. Mathews gone for a brilliant 110 of 240 balls punctuated with 13 hits to the fence.

A truly captain's knock. But now Sri Lanka is in deep trouble. Can they save the test match. Sri Lanka- 249/7 after 81 overs.

02:55 PM

Suddenly Indians looking all animated. Two confident appeal against Herath by Ashwin, first one for lbw and second one for catch. Both turned down by the umpire.

Mathews for now is trusting Herath to survive Indian bowling. He is not really looking to protect him. Herath survives Mishra too.

And that's tea. 115 runs scored by Sri Lanka and they have lost only one wicket. This was a session dominated by Sri Lanka but India still favourite to win this test match. The post tea session promises to be a cracker.

Much depends on Mathews and how he approaches the game from here. SL- 249/6 after 80 overs. They need 137 runs to win and India need 4 wickets.

02:45 PM

OUT! The wicket Indians were looking for. Perera reverse sweeps Ashwin only to find Rohit Sharma at cover. He is gone for 70 of 106 balls. Some words exchanged in the middle, Perera is definitely not amused.

Herath is the next man in. SL-245/6 after 77 overs. India right back in the match again!

02:25 PM

100 for Angelo Mathews. 7th test ton for him. He has taken 217 balls to reach his hundred. Great knock under pressure. A truly deserving 100. Indian shoulders are drooping and chances of a win also fading fast. Will Sri Lanka shift gear now and look for a win?

SL-237/5 after 73 overs.

02:20 PM

Binny has been brought back. Is it a ploy to lure Mathews into a false sense of security?

Mishra is bowling from other end.  Perera though has now decided to accelerate. He is playing a wide array of strokes rattling the Indian bowlers. SL-224/5 after 72 overs.

02:15 PM

Mathews is currently not out on 96, Perera on 57. The partnership is worth 112 runs. Indians have bowled to their plans but there is not much help in the track. The rub of the green has also gone against them. But nothing to take away from the two Sri Lankans who have been stellar in their aggression mixed with caution.

02:11 PM

Mishra traps Angelo Mathews right in front of the stumps. Extremely confident appeal but umpire indicates that there was a faint edge. But the replays paint a different picture.

There was no edge and Mathews escapes. This is a huge moment in the test match. A wicket here could have again shifted momentum in India's favour. Expect Virat Kohli to be quizzed about DRS if India fail to win this test match here. SL- 219/5 after 70 overs.

02:06 PM

50 for Kusal Perera. A solid knock from him, never looked bothered by Indian bowlers. What a dream debut for him. Now he will try to ensure that his team saves this test match. It has been an innings mixed with aggression and caution, exactly what the situation demanded. SL- 212/5 after 69 overs. Angelo on the other hand has slowly moved to the 90s.

02:04 PM

The left hand and right handed partnership is not making work easy for Indian bowlers. The strike is rotated frequently so bowlers are forced to also alter their line. 200 up for Sri Lanka in 68 overs. Perera is not out on 40 and Mathews on 88. Kohli has to find a way to break this partnership soon. SL- 203/5 after 68 overs.

01:45 PM

Sri Lankans have completely dominated the post lunch session so far. Runs are coming thick and fast. India have their best bowlers in Ashwin and Ishant in operation, but as of now both look listless.

After 64 overs, SL-196/5. Current partnership is 89 runs and it is threatening to take the match away from India's grasp.

01:30 PM

A good phase for Sri Lanka. Both the two batsman playing Mishra and Ashwin with great ease. No real devil in the pitch and Perera particularly has upped the ante. After 60 overs it is 183/5.

Perera is not out on 43 of 65 balls. He has hit 7 boundaries so far. Mathews is not out of 74 but more importantly he has played 174 balls.

Kohli has brought back Ishant Sharma to get a breakthrough.

01:05 PM

Sri Lankans have come out with a very positive intent after the lunch break. It is more about unsettling the rhythm of the bowlers than actually going for the steep target. Perera is scoring on a fair clip and Mathews has been simply exceptional. Except Ishant hardly anyone have managed to make him uncomfortable in the crease. Amit Mishra has replaced Ashwin.

Kohli is using his bowlers in short burst to keep them fresh. SL-162/5 after 54 overs.

12:45 PM

Lovely pull by Perera off Yadav. He is almost a carbon-copy of his idol Sanath Jayasuriya. Mathews looks to be a picture of concentration. He has a test to save!

But he is leaving no chance to hit the bad balls to the fence. Mathews not out on 61, Sri Lanka 145-5

12:43 PM

Hello and welcome to our match updates of the post lunch session.

There is not much devil in this pitch and Sri Lanka will hope to wear down the Indian bowlers to make their job easy.

Ashwin bowls the first over and it is nicely negotiated by Lankans. SL-136/5 after 48 overs.

12:05 PM

Ishant is back in action. India will like to get one more before lunch surely. A beauty from Ishant and it nearly forces Mathews to poke an edge. Top quality bowling this from Ishant.

Change of plans from Ishant bowling round the wicket to Perera. Lots of no-balls from Indian bowlers. They will hope that it doesn't cost them dearly. And it's lunch.

Sri Lanka scored 67 runs in first session of day 5 and India got 2 wickets. Angelo Mathews is playing like a rock not out on 56.

We will be back for post lunch updates. Sri Lanka- 134/5 after 47 overs.

11:55 AM

Good attacking intent shown by Kusal Perera. He is using his feet nicely, getting to the pitch of the ball to muzzle the spin. This pitch is no landmine and Sri Lankans need to apply themselves to dig deep if they want to deny India a win. SL- 131/5 after 46 overs.

11:43 AM

Mishra and Ashwin bowling in tandem. Not much help from the pitch though. Kusal Perera is the new man in. Increasingly it is clear that Mathews stands behind India and elusive away series victory.

Fifty for Mathews! He is not out on 51 of 121 balls. A good steady innings under pressure. Sri Lanka will like him to continue for a long time.

11:29 AM

Ashwin is bowling from the other end. And he strikes immediately. Thirimanne is gone. He defends a ball from Ashwin only to get a leading edge. A brilliant reflex catch by KL Rahul at silly point. Thirimanne gone from 12 after playing 47 balls. Sri Lanka 107-5 after 38 overs.

11:22 AM

As expected, spin from both ends now. Amit Mishra in his very first over managed to get decent purchase from the pitch. It is definitely a heartening sign from Indian perspective,.

11:17 AM

100 up for Sri Lanka. A lovely straight drive from Mathews off Binny's bowling. Lovely extension of the arms to hit it straight pass the bowlers. Mathews looks set now inching towards his 50. SL- 103/4 after 26 overs.

11:15 AM

Players have taken a drinks. Sri Lanka is on 99/4 after 35 overs. Both Thirimanne and Mathews have made their intentions amply clear that they are not going to take any excessive risk. The pitch also looks benign. It is upto the Indians now to make something happen. Sri Lankans will be contend to merely seat back and bide their time in the middle.  Mathews- 40. Thirimanne- 10

11:03 AM

Binny and Yadav bowling from both ends. Hardly much of an assistance for the bowlers and Sri Lankans are having it easy currently. Virat Kohli needs to get his spinners in soon to pose some fresh questions to the Lankans.

He has got Ishant back again. Immaculate line from the lanky bowler so far. SL-95/4 after 33 overs.

10:30 AM

Umesh bowling a little short of good length. Ishant on the other hand bowling a much fuller line. He is trying to extract some purchase from the pitch. Ishant nearly gets Thirimanne. A confident appeal but the ball hit Thirimanne's wrists before going to keeper's hand. A good call by the umpire. SL- 83/4 after 27 overs.

10:20 AM

Mix-up between Thirimanne and Mathews. R Ashwin had three stumps to aim at the bowlers' end but he fails to hit the bulls eye. Mathews survives a scare.

Thirimanne receives attention from physio  SL - 83/4 after 25 overs.

10:06 AM

Lahiru Thirimanne is the new batsman in. Much will depend on this partnership if Sri Lanka have to save this test match. Umesh beats Thirimanne, there is an appeal but umpire is not impressed.

Ishant and Umesh bowling in tandem. Good ol' test bowling. It will be interesting to see how Sri Lankans approach this phase of the match. SL -77/4

09:58 AM

OUT! Umesh Yadav pitches it short, Kaushal Silva pulls it but completely mistimes the shot. Pujara takes a comfortable catch at mid-wicket. This is a case of aggression gone wrong. Silva was in no position to hit that ambitious stroke. SL- 74/4

09:53 AM

After one over from Ashwin, Kohli has introduced Ishant into the attack. Ishant straightaway getting some purchase from the wicket. He is bowling in the channel. a probing line. Sri Lankan batters need to be careful.

09:50 AM

So 98 overs to play. Kohli starts with Ashwin in one end and Umesh Yadav from other end. Umesh was erratic yesterday although he took one wicket. Let's see how he goes today.

Not much assistance from the pitch for Umesh. SL- 73/3 after 20 overs.
