IPL 8 Chennai Super Kings v/s Sunrisers Hyderabad: McCullum 100 helps CSK win easily

Chennai Super Kings have comfortably beaten Sunrisers Hyderabad by 45 runs. To be frank, SRH were never in the game once McCullum started attacking every over. McCullum and Dhoni almost batted Hyderabad out of the game. After a short flurry from Shikhar Dhawan, Hyderabad just kept falling behind the run rate. Warner was not able to keep up with the run rate, and eventually they fell well short.

Over 20

Single off the final ball, and CSK are home by 45 runs.

SIX. Williamson clobbers Sharma down the ground for six. Only that it's way too late.

Yet another slower ball, length on middle and off, and Rasool misses.

Good ball, yorker, Mohit saw the batsman coming, he fired in a leg stump yorker. Steered to third man for one.

FOUR. Parvez Rasool hits a short, hit-me ball from Mohit over midwicket. It bisects long on and a squarish deep midwicket to go for four.

Mohit Sharma to bowl the last over.

Over 19

OUT! Karn Sharma finally holes out, hits another slower ball down to long off, Suresh Raina takes a good catch low. SRH all but done, 150/6.

Another short slower ball, Williamson hits it down the ground for one.

Slower short ball to Karn Sharma, pulled to long leg with effort for one.

Slower ball from Bravo, Williamson slams it down the ground for one.

Over 18

Swing and a miss off the last ball, it was the slower ball from Nehra. SRH 145/5 after 18 overs.

Perfect yorker on leg stump, all Williamson can do is dig it out, and he looks to have given up on the chase anyway. 68 off 15.

Full toss outside leg, called a wide ball.

Slower ball outside off, surprises Williamson who just scoops it up in the air in a manner of incompetence. Lands in no man's land around mid off though.

Ashish Nehra comes back, and bowls a wide to begin with.

Over 17

Good slower yorker, Williamson digs it out to long on for one. 138/5 after 17.

Karn Sharma comes out to bat, gets a thick edge off a widish ball outside off. A single to third man. Last rites really, now.

OUT. Bowled, yorked, perfect yorker from Bravo which hit bottom of middle stump. Bopara goes for 22, SRH 136/5.

Slower ball, Bopara dabs a single behind point.

On the pads, Williamson can't get it away, just a single.

Wide ball, Bravo saw Williamson advancing down the track, bowled short, slow and wide, but too wide according to the umpire.

Dwayne Bravo to bowl.

Over 16

Two singles off the last 2 balls, SRH 132/4, 17 off the over and still not enough.

SIX! And again. Bopara gets much more elevation this time, and hits a bit straighter. The ball hits the sightscreen. Maybe it's not over yet.

SIX. Ravi Bopara launches a full ball from Jadeja over long off.

Williamson gets a single to long on. You've come in too late, mate.

Sir Ravindra Jadeja will bowl now. 95 needed off 30.

Over 15

13 off the over, SRH 115/4.

OUT. He tries it again, but this time he cannot get the elevation. Holes out at deep midwicket, but Smith took a good catch. He knew exactly where the fence was.

SIX!  Short ball from Ishwar Pandey, Warner pulls it over deep midwicket for six.

FOUR. Warner gets four through the on side, but they need much more.

Over 14

Three off the over, SRH 102/3, and it's another strategic timeout.

Yet another reverse sweep, finally connects, and a single to short fine leg. This match is heading out of SRH's grasp quickly.

Sunrisers' batsmen are sweeping, pulling, scooping Ashwin, without any success.

Ashwin continues.

Over 13

Two off the last ball, SRH 99/3 after 13 overs.

Another short ball, Warner can only pull it down to deep midwicket. Desperate times now.

Short ball from Ishwar Pandey, Warner misses with the hook, gets an upper edge and the ball crashes into his grille. But unhurt, thankfully.

114 off 45 needed now, just 3 singles off the first 3 balls.

Over 12

Just 5 off the over, SRH 93/3 after 12 overs.

Ravi Bopara is the new batsman, still no Kane Williamson. This strategy challenges logic.

OUT! Something had to give. Ojha's struggle is over. Down the ground, innocuous ball outside off, Ojha tries to lift it over long off for six, gets a top edge which is taken by long off running in.

SRH are struggling to find the fence, the required rate is 13.5

Over 10

SIX. Short, half-tracker, dismissed over the deep midwicket fence. Bad ball to end, SRH 80/2.

Now he's down the track, slaps a cut, or rather edges it to third man for one.

Wide outside off, spinning in, Ojha tries to whack the cover off the ball, gets another inside edge, for one run this time.

Ball in the slot on off stump, Naman Ojha gives it the full gun across the line, inside edge, no run.

R Ashwin to David Warner, single to fine leg.

Over 9

Slower ball, single to deep mid on. SRH 69/2 after 9 overs, and it's timeout time.

Full outside off from around the wicket, Warner throws his bat, the ball takes an edge and flies to third man for two.

Bravo has been milked for four off his first three balls.

Hyderabad already need over 12 an over.

Bravo comes in to bowl, and Warner thrashes him through the off side but finds sweeper cover.

Over 8

Just four off the over, SRH 62/2 after 8 overs.

Huge bounce from Ashwin, the ball also spun away from Warner. The batsman went bonkers, he tried a reverse sweep-scoop over the slip fielders' heads.

R Ashwin comes into the attack.

Over 7

FOUR Leg byes. Slower full toss on leg stumps, Warner tries to flick it, misses, but the ball beats Dhoni. The bowler screams as if it was a brilliant piece of bowling. 58/2.

Slower short ball on middle and leg, Warner goes down on one knee and tries to flick it over short fine leg, misses.

He gets a quick single to short third man. Why not Kane Williamson?

Tucked into the hips, Warner misses the flick, ball trickles to the on side and they get a leg bye. Oh, and Naman Ojha is the new batsman.

Short on middle and off, Warner tries to beat short third man with the cut, but fails.

SIX. Warner rocks back to a short ball from new bowler Pandey, and pulls it high over square leg for six.

Over 6

OUT. End of an uncomfortable innings in an uncomfortable fashion. Mohit bowls a back-of-the-hand slower ball, Rahul doesn't really read it. Gives room to slog, ball is full, ricochetes off Rahul's pads and onto the stumps.

Huge appeal for caught behind! KL Rahul held out his bat at a ball just outside off and looked behind as the ball found Dhoni's gloves. Was close, by the looks of it.

SIX! Short outside off, sits up for Warner, who pulls hard. The ball flies to a squarish deep midwicket, Jadeja runs in and dives, but the ball hits his fingers and parries over the fence. Jadeja does a dive into the boundary for the cameras, and the oncoming ridicule on social media.

Over 5

Oh dear, another slower ball, Rahul is early into the shot again, no feet. The ball falls short of short cover this time. SRH 37/1 after 5.

Oh, great, great ball. It started on middle stump, moved late and just outside off, Rahul almost got an edge, pulled out in the end.

Rahul flashes outside off stump this time and misses.

FOUR. Edged! KL Rahul is done in by the slower ball, he plays with no feet and bat out, gets an edge. However, the lack of pace of the ball means it falls short of first slip. What's more, it goes for four.

Over 4

Wide outside off, Warner slashes it away on the move, but only a single to deep point. SRH 32/1 after 4 overs.

KL Rahul is the new batsman. He gets a short ball head high first ball, pulls it to long leg. Rahul did well to keep the ball down.

OUT! Out against the run of play. Was he deceived by the lack of pace? Yes, it was the slower ball, full outside off, Dhawan drove a little too early, got a thick edge which flew to backward point. SRH 30/1.

Length ball coming into Warner, just outside off. Warner drives but gets an edge to the on side for one.

Now a single through the covers, giving the strike to Warner, who's just faced 3 balls.

FOUR. Short ball, not much pace from Mohit, sits up on Dhawan who pulls it over the in field on the on side for another four.

Over 3

Dhawan moves to the off side, then plays an on drive for one to long on. End of the over, SRH 24/0 after 3 overs.

FOUR. Brilliant batting, ball was just short outside off, Dhawan uses the pace to bisect gully and short third man, the ball races to the fence.

Dhawan and Warner exchange singles off the first two balls.

Over 2

Single off the last ball, SRH 15/0 after 2, only 5 off the over after all that aggression.

Dhawan advances down the track, slaps a shortish ball hard, but only finds wide mid off.

Slightly fuller, slightly closer to the stumps and Dhawan defends it into the off side.

Short outside off, Dhawan cuts hard, finds a diving Suresh Raina at cover point, who has aggression in his eyes.

FOUR. Mohit Sharma is the new bowler, his pace is gentle on the hips and his length is short, Dhawan pulls him over square leg for four.

Over 1

Some more late swing from the bowler, Dhawan uses it to guide the ball to third man for one. SRH 10/0 after 1 over.

FOUR. After two dot balls, Nehra bowls a full one just outside off. Late swing, but Dhawan's drive covers it well. Down the ground, beats mid off and four.

FOUR. Crunched through the covers off the back foot. Slightly short and wide and it was enough for Dhawan.

Warner is immediately on the attack, clobbering Nehra over the on side, but just a single to deep square leg.

Ashish Nehra, India discard is the bowler.

The SRH openers are out to the middle. Warner and Dhawan.

Very good batting performance from CSK. The Hyderabad bowlers were hammered all over the park by McCullum, who only got better as the innings went on. Dhoni started slowly but got into his big-hitting groove eventually. Great finish from Baz, even Trent Boult couldn't keep him quiet. Huge chase for Hyderabad on the cards.

Over 20

Yorker and fast, on middle and off, McCullum biffs it hard into the off side, takes a quick single, the throw doesn't hit the stumps for once, and McCullum reaches 100 off the last ball of the innings. CSK end on 209/4.

FOUR. What does Boult do! Slower short ball, throat high, McCullum swivels again, scoops again, the ball flies behind the keeper, slightly to the off side, lands just inside the fence, four.

SIX. Slower, low full toss, McCullum moves away and scoops it behind the keeper for six!

Run out. Third run out of the innings, Sir Jadeja is left stranged and left looking foolish. McCullum was almost shaking hands with the keeper leaving Jadeja mid-pitch in his run. The ball was hit staight back to Boult, who hit the non-striker's stumps direct.

OUT. Hit straight to cover, Warner massages his hands, it was hit really hard. Finally a CSK bowler gets a wicket. Who else but Trent Boult.

FOUR. Slogged between deep midwicket and deep square leg, and Dhoni has fifty.

Over 19

Dhoni gets a single to midwicket off the last ball, denies McCullum the strike again. CSK 194/2 after 19 overs.

Down the track, Dhoni misses with the cross batted heave this time.

FOUR. Down the track and a cross-batted slog by Dhoni, connects well, deep square leg is a spectator.

FOUR. Slogged over midwicket, brute power from Dhoni. He's reaping the rewards of coming in up the order.

Over 18

SIX. 51 off 4 overs. In the slot again, Dhoni just takes a step down this time, gets the ball full in the meat of the bat, huge six over long on. CSK 184/2.

Short, McCullum tries to pull the ball into the stands, can't get the elevation. Goes out to deep midwicket for one.

Down the track and a single to long off.

SIX! Swung across the line, length ball again, this time the deep midwicket fence is treated to a six.

SIX! Karn Sharma is bowling in the slot, the pitch is not turning much and the batsmen are launching it for six. Dhoni shimmies down, hits the ball cleanly down the ground and into the stands for six. No trouble.

Over 17

Single off the last ball, CSK 164/2.

Biffed into the off side, no power, just a single.

WIDE ball, it was so wide that two McCullums stretching full length wouldn't have got to it.

Single to the on side, and now Baz is on strike.

Change of pace, slower ball outside off and Dhoni is beaten.

SIX! Huge effort six from Dhoni, waltzes down the pitch, slogs Kumar over wide long on. The ball just lands outside the rope.

Dhoni gets two quick runs to long leg. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the bowler.

Over 16

Timeout.

Single off the last ball, Dhoni keeps strike, CSK 152/2 after 16 overs.

FOUR. Beautiful wrists from Dhoni! Low full toss on middle and off, Dhoni uses his wrists to bisect cover point and gully, for four runs.

DROPPED. McCullum gave room, the ball was short and Baz rocked back to lift it over the covers. It was not a clean hit, sweeper cover ran in and dived, but then dropped the low catch. Kane Williamson is the guilty party.

After a single from McCullum, Dhoni can't beat short fine leg off a full toss on leg stump. One run.

Dhoni tries to lift Bopara into the stands over long on, only manages to get a single to wide long on.

Over 15

Slightly fuller outside off, Dhoni hits straight to point again, and runs a very quick single. Baz lost his helmet as he finished his run! CSK 143/2, great over.

Same delivery, this time Dhoni beats point, third man cuts it off but CSK run a good two.

Another wide yorker, Dhoni dabs it with more intent this time but again finds point.

Yorker wide outside off but Dhoni only digs it out straight to point.

Great ball, slower outside off and seaming away, Dhoni can't get his bat to it.

Trent Boult comes back.

Over 14

FOUR. Fortune favours the audacious. McCullum is early into a drive, gets an inside edge which misses the stumps and beats fine leg for four. CSK 140/2.

Driven through the covers, sweeper cover stops it, just one.

Slower yorker first up, dug out by Captain Cool.

Captain Cool MS Dhoni comes out to the middle. Good decision to push himself up the order.

OUT. Another run out? Raina might be gone. He advanced down the track, Bopara dropped it short, Raina hit straight to point and tried to set off, was sent back by Bang Bang McCullum. The throw was in and though the fielder had just one stump to aim at, he did aim well.

Bopara to Raina, played away for a single. Next ball, McCullum turns the srike back to Raina.

Over 13

Dot ball to end the over, CSK 133/1 after 13 overs.

SIX! Short from Karn Sharma, McCullum rocks back and pulls for six! The ball barely flew over deepmidwicket's head, and in any era that should not have been more than four.

SIX! Great use of the feet again from McCullum, lifted over long off with great flair and better timing.

Raina advances down the pitch to the spinner but the flatter line forces him to play it through midwicket for one.

Over 12

Short outside leg, Raina moves across and flicks it to long leg, a diving stop by the fielder saves a boundary. CSK 119/1 after 12 overs.

Short ball into the ribs, McCullum pulls hard again, but gets an inside edge to fine leg for one. Horrid over so far.

SIX. Full toss off the FREE HIT, McCullum goes down on one knee, swivels and lifts the ball behind the keeper, for six!

FOUR, and NO BALL again. McCullum advances, Sharma's intended full toss becomes a low full toss, Baz gets a thick edge and the ball flies behind point for four.

No-ball happy Ishant Sharma bowls the 12th over.

Over 10

SIX! Lifted with immense power over wide long on, who was just a spectator as the ball sailed over the fence. CSK 89/1 after 10 overs.

FOUR. McCullum shoots the next ball over cover, Kumar is running in hard from the long off fence, but he can only slide into the fence.

Parvez Rasool is the new bowler.

Over 9

Quiet over for CSK, just 3 off it. 78/1 after 9 overs.

Suresh Raina is the new batsman. He gets a single first ball. Oh and Ravi Bopara, brought in for Dale Steyn, was the bowler.

OUT. Run out. Dwayne Smith is out to a great direct hit from behind the wicket, he was running well but the throw was flat and crashed into the stumps at the striker's end. I dunno why they even called for the replay.

FREE HIT. SIX! Slightly short outside off, McCullum comes down the track, goes over long on for six.

NO BALL. Another no ball from Ishant, he's bowling well but bowling no balls. He saw McCullum coming down, bowled the slower one, but alas.

Misses. Next ball is just outside off, swings a bit away, Smith plays and misses.

FOUR. What a corker. What a shot, Dwayne Smith has driven it down the ground with the kind of contempt Lara would display. Absolutely straight bat, perfect position, economical bat swing.

Over 6

Oh, he DEFENDS IT TEST MATCH STYLE DOWN THE GROUND. CSK 49/0 after 6 overs.

Smith pinches another quick single, last ball of the Powerplay coming - for McCullum.

Single to wide long on. McCullum is standing outside leg stump. I love this stance.

SIX. No difference baby. Short ball on middle, McCullum rocks back and pulls it with contempt over deep square leg.

Karn Sharma comes in, so McCullum can like the bowling less.

Over 5

7 off the over, CSK 41/1 after 5 overs.

FREE HIT. FOUR. Ishant spears the next ball in just outside off, just full, and Smith rocks back, leans in front and carves it through covers. Beats cover point. Good ball, good shot.

NO BALL. Another no ball, slower ball outside off. The ball was good but the overstepping ruined it.

Smith comes down the track, swings across the line like a poor tailender, and misses. It was a length ball just outside off.

FREE HIT. Slow yorker by Ishant, good ball, McCullum brings down his bat and looks to send it into next week, gets an edge to the on side for one.

Over 3

Nice and full, driven down the ground but can't beat mid off. CSK 23/0 after 3.

Yorked on off, digs it out, good ball, and Kumar is talking.

Slower ball from Kumar, but well wide of leg stump, Brendon watches it go.

SIX. There goes McCullum, like it's the World Cup semifinal. Shimmy down the track, swings a length ball over midwicket for six.

Oh dear. Smith was late to take off for the quick run, the throw fails to hit the non strikers end and goes out to long on, but its 4 overthrows.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar sends down another wide off the second ball off the over.

Over 2

Brilliant ball, hits McCullum on the pad? Goes to the keeper, cutting Smith in half, who was late on the shot. Huge appeal, no says umpire. CSK 11/0 after 2 overs.

Nearly gets yorked, driven to wide fine leg, stopped, no run.

Boult strays on the pads but Smith fails to put bat on it.

Dabbed to the off side, very quick T20-like single, and McCullum is home way before the throw comes in.

Wide first ball from....Trent Boult. Contest on hands.

Here comes Brendon McCullum.

Over 1

Two dot balls to end the over, CSK 4/0 after 1 over.
