Twitter explodes during IPL final between Kolkata and Punjab; Piyush Chawla's winning shot most tweeted

Twitter was a hot space for following the Indian Premier League's 7th season. Despite being 7 days shorter than IPL 6, tweets mentioning the official handle @IPL wereup 24% over 2013 and Tweets mentioning the official hashtag #PepsiIPL were up an impressive 59% over 2013.

Kolkata Knight Riders might have won the final on the pitch, but it was Kings XI Punjab who won the final on Twitter. According to the fan meter on the IPL offcial website - iplt20.com - for the match, #KXIP clocked 28,125 Tweets while #KKR had 23,085 Tweets.

The most tweeted moment of the IPL final was Piyush Chawla's boundary to seal the match and the tournament. Punjab's Wriddhiman Saha’s six to reach the first ever century in an IPL final was a close second, with Manish Pandey’s dismissal, Chawla’s match-turning six off Mitchell Johnson and Saha’s consecutive boundaries in the last over of the Kings XI innings the 3rd, 4th and 5th most tweeted moments.

Wriddhiman Saha, though, pipped Piyush Chawla when it came to the most tweeted players in the IPL final, thanks to his scintillating century. Man of the Match Manish Pandey was second on this list, and Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir was third. Virender Sehwag came in fourth and Glenn Maxwell, fifth.

Shah Rukh Khan’s joyous tweets after the final were the most retweeted. Among others, RCB batsman and India player Virat Kohli’s tweet complimenting Shah Rukh on his sportsmanship after the final (1411 ReTweets) and a saddened Preity Zinta’s message to her team Kings XI Punjab (953 ReTweets) were retweeted many times over as well.
