Unexplained mysteries linger on...

As the nation paid homage on the anniversary of the deadly attacks, there are still many
unanswered questions. DNA asks Mumbaikars and former police officers if they are astounded with the new revelations cropping up every single day.

RTI can be used to unearth the truth
I don’t think that there is any conspiracy behind the deaths of Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare, additional commissioner Ashok Kamte and inspector Vijay Salaskar. If people feel that something is being hidden from them regarding the whole Mumbai siege, then they should approach the concerned authorities. The RTI Act can be used to ferret the truth.
—MN Singh, Former police commissioner

Conspiracy lies in purchase of jackets
I don’t think there was any conspiracy to kill the three top cops. It was more a case of gross negligence by the police officers. Despite Hemant Karkare having died two hours after the attacks at CST, there were not enough measures taken for their security. Also the second aspect was the corruption involved while buying the jackets. All the five bullets went to Karkare’s shoulders, but if they had bought the right jacket, according to the specifications then the shoulder would have been covered and Karkare would have been alive. So these jackets were without the armour on the shoulder and hence it caused his death. Also CST is quite close to Cama Hospital where many policemen had reached, but by that time the terrorists managed to kill three of them.  But Karkare did not die of a conspiracy; it was just gross negligence and corruption while procuring the bullet proof jackets.
—YP Singh, former IPS officer and lawyer

No reason to smell a rat
Circumstances in which senior IPS officers Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar died are clear now since all facts have been established. The investigation is going on and postmortem has been performed, which is helping in understanding, what happened that night. I don’t think there is any conspiracy behind it as facts are clear and out in front of the public.
—Arvind Inamdar, former director general of police

Point
Shame that kin had to rely on RTI reports
There doesn’t seem to be any conspiracy, it was just bad luck. Lack of coordination among fellow policemen was one of the reasons. All policemen should be provided with proper bullet-proof life jackets and sniper cover, while operating in such conditions. These measures will actually save lives of the policemen. Vinita Kamte and others are blaming the system and Mumbai police as they are angry with the government.  There could have been some miscommunication since the situation was bad.

Indeed sad that some are still in search of truth
On the whole tragedy, we are unable to find the masterminds and unearth many other details from the last one year. The reason for the sad demise of the three officers was a lapse on the part of our police. We were not prepared to deal with an attack of this magnitude. Many are dissecting the entire affair, and it’s getting complicated by giving false promises to their families. Kasab is living a peaceful life in a jail, but families of those who sacrificed their lives are still in search of the truth.

Several unanswered questions still persist
There is surely some conspiracy behind the whole thing. The terrorists had all the information about officers and their plans. It's hard to imagine why such high ranking officers were never given assistance and protective gear during the attack. Kavita Karkare, wife of late ATS chief Hemant Karkare, is still waiting to know what exactly happened and why her husband and two other officers never got any reinforcements on time. Personally I'm waiting to read the book 'The last bullet' written by Vinita Kamte.
—Jas Singh

Unpleasant questions being raised again
Families of all officers are not convinced about how the three senior officers died. Vinita Kamte has also disclosed that her husband was lying there for 40minutes. He could have been saved. It may happen that all things which are coming to our mind, can be wrong. But we need clarifications, which nobody is willing to offer. This is not the first time someone is raising questions. Even after the attacks, then union minister AR Antulay made some remarks about Karkare's death.

Counterpoint
Government is surely trying to hide something
It was a conspiracy, since the policemen were not well informed about the number of terrorists and their location. Why would three policemen go in unprepared? Mumbai police has to be blamed for their slow reaction and lack of a back-up plan. Same was the scene at Nariman House. When the terrorists attacked, there were no cops in the locality to help the civilians. The state is not cooperating with the families of slain policemen. Is it just being done to hide the actual reasons of this attack.

Our unprepared police force had it coming
The officers were just caught off guard. They were at the wrong place at the wrong time. I would like to know about what happened to the bullet-proof jacket and why is it still missing? The suspicion is only fanning the fire. The government was negligent, ill-prepared and indecisive which resulted in several casualties and emotional outbursts. I'm sure there are still several facts and critical information is unknown to the general public and it might never be revealed. One has surely got to blame the intelligence for failing.

Need to investigate all allegations levelled
There are new theories and revelations coming out everyday. I find it suspicious that all top policemen had to be present at Cama Hospital together. Till date I cannot digest that they were killed so easily. Last year former CM AR Antulay had raised doubts about the killing of Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare, who headed the Malegaon blast probe, which revealed the alleged role of right-wing activists. Then were they hushed up and now the same questions are being raised again.

Correct flaws in the functioning of force
I'm unsure whether it was a case of sheer bad luck or a conspiracy was afoot. It was a big mistake on the part of the police department to send them there. If any terrorist act takes place, the first thing is to inform and alert each and every official in the force. It's a shame on our system that we are giving a shabby treatment to the widows of those men who gave up their life for our country. They must seek details via the Right to Information Act. On the other hand, Kasab has been given first class treatment.
