The wrong kind of aspiration

A study has warned that young girls who are obsessed with ‘size-zero’ and resort to dieting are putting their bones at risk. Speak Up asks people if being wafer thin more important than being healthy and fit.

The wrong kind of aspiration

I think, I’m not size zero. At least I look better than that.”
Kareena Kapoor, actor

Don’t tamper with diet
Zero size becomes an aspiration after watching film stars. This aspiration has generated the most dangerous trend among the teenage girls and women and they have started avoiding a balanced diet. They feel if they eat less, they will get the right shape rapidly. But they require understanding that everybody has different nutritional requirement. Fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and proteins are very important for daily consumption. These ingredients are the necessity. For getting the right shape exercises like yoga, aerobics, walking etc are the right method.

What’s wrong in looking sexy?
It will be wrong to say that size zero trend has been influenced by models. No doubt we had supermodels like Meher Jessia and Madhu Sapre but today's generation doesn't have that aspiration. Today children are influenced more by the Hindi cinema. And if Kareenas of Bollywood are size zero then of course girls will want to follow them. And because of this adolescents are becoming conscious of what they eat which in a way is good; because with a variety of junk food available, children are becoming obese. Therefore, it also promotes health. But we need to be careful and not resort to extreme measures.

Health and beauty go hand in hand
It is true that most women or teenagers come to me for getting a zero size shape. There is nothing wrong in having a slim body since it makes a person attractive and creates a good feel. But we need to set a limit to the extent we can go to appear appealing. There is a link between one’s body, height and weight, we must not tamper with that ratio. Getting right shape is not just about losing weight. It is an entire process which includes proper diet, exercise, detoxification of the body and mental strength. So being attractive is also associated with being healthy.

Models are lanky, but look good
As long as we aren’t starving ourselves, I don’t think there is anything wrong in going size zero. Many of my friends are obsessed about being thin. Even I would like to be slender and skinny. One can fit into clothes well and also being slim adds to the whole look. Kareena Kapoor has lost dollops of weight and is size zero now though she denies it. There are many models who are emaciated, but they look quite good. So it depends on how one carries the size zero look.

Slim actors don’t look appealing
I would rather be healthy and fit than blindly follow trends. I don’t think that the super slim models or actors look appealing at all. Also I have read about the long term heath hazards about the methods one uses to get thin. I prefer eating healthy than starving or depriving myself. Also exercise should be done in limits. I have seen people pushing themselves and just worrying about their weight the whole day. One has to feel good from within to look beautiful.

Men obsessed with looks too
Today, there is a craze for the size zero look and this is not restricted to only women. Men are equally conscious about their appearance. Not many would feel comfortable discussing it, but even men too want to be healthy and in good shape. Also many actors have set the trend of six pack abs, these days so youngsters would like to ape them. But one should keep their personality and own physique in mind and not opt for any unnatural methods just to look cool.

Size zero figure is unrealistic
I’m not at all obsessed about being wafer thin nor is weight loss on my mind. I actually don’t like the undernourished look at all. According to me, a wafer thin built and size zero figure don’t qualify as ‘sizes’. What’s the point of being skinny and unhealthy? I’m not at all influenced by undernourished models. I would never imitate them since I think it’s unrealistic. Everybody has a different physique. One has to be healthy and look good that’s important.     —Sunayan Shahani
