Should abortion be made legal up to 24 weeks?
I totally agree with the move of making abortion legal up to 24 weeks. If this law is followed through out the world then why not in India. This would give the right to the mother to terminate her pregnancy after 20 weeks. But then a check must be kept as people might just take undue advantage of this move. –Khushboo Sahrawat

This actions should have been implemented long time ago, I don’t know why the government was taking so long to take this decision. We are risking the mother life by prolonging this decision. India has developed and we have the technology that can detect congenital anomalies now so we must alter our law according to it.
–Sera Cherian

There are parents who shower all possible love and care irrespective of their children having congenital anomalies. However, not all families can sustain the costs and complications arising out of the same. As long as sex determination of the unborn child is not the reason, the legal period for abortion should be increased.  –Kairav Parikh

Abortion is a serious matter and what is more important is the health of the mother. I think the mother has the right to terminate her child if the child faces some complications. Across the world, each and every country follows the 24 week rule for abortion then why should India be an exception? The move is needed.                      –Dhruv Tomar

India is progressing in every field then why not alter our law to determine better health care and facilities for the mother. Extending the weeks for abortion would be a step towards a healthy and a developed society. We must now move away from the social and religious matters and focus on serious issues like abortion. I will be very happy if this suggestion is transformed into a law.

The government is considering to increase the legal period of abortion from 20 weeks to 24 on the recommendations of a health ministry committee is a good move. I think it should be implemented at the earliest.  There can be problems in a fetus that are only visible after 20 weeks which can be fatal for child and mother. –Hemal Rajgor

In India, legal abortion beyond 20 weeks can only be done in certain circumstances. It’s good that the MTP act will be amended in the wake of the Niketa Mehta case. If complications arise either in the mother or the child or some rare disease that the child suffers from, then the legal period needs to be increased to 24 weeks.
–Hardik Dani

I think that it’s a women’s choice if she wants to abort the child or not if any disorder is detected in the child. I don’t think that government is late making changes in the law. Niketa Mehta’s case is an eye-opener; many mothers must have faced similar problems. The government should implement the law as soon as possible.      Manohara M

Indian government is slow in extending the legal period of abortion. In other countries it’s already been extended. India always waits for something worse to happen and then they try to fix the problems. The Niketa Mehta case happened almost a year back and the India judiciary is still considering the changes.
