Putting an end to the menace of rash driving

A survey was conducted with regard to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and rash driving. It found that mostly non-air-conditioned buses were involved in accidents. It is easy to criticise BEST bus drivers and every citizen will condemn their driving out of habit.

But if we delve deeper into matter and analyse why BEST bus drivers are rash and negligent, the true picture will emerge. Drivers of air-conditioned buses, the new ones, are very calm and careful, but in case of non-air-conditioned buses the opposite is true.

This is because the atmosphere and cool environment in the new buses makes the driver drive carefully whereas in non-air-conditioned buses, the heat, dust and constant din of the environs makes the driver weary. The only goal of the driver is to complete the journey and get a breather. This makes him prone to rash driving.

The transport undertaking must do citizens a favour by introducing more air-conditioned buses, which will not only reduce traffic but also win the accolades for good driving.

Students of SNDT College Matunga have been at the receiving end of the acts of reckless driving near the college road. Due to the errant drivers, a few days ago we lost a sweeper.

Two boys on motorbikes were racing and collided with her, while she was crossing the road, in broad daylight. This has made us a worried lot, because there are no traffic police constables to bring the errant bikers to book.
