Ease your troubles with one call
For the net savvy individuals, in today’s face paced world there are many networking sites and online portals to be in touch with people from across the globe. At the same time, for many senior citizens in the city just a phone call to someone to listen to them when they are distressed or feeling lonely is sufficient.

There are many help lines for students and even women can avail of. With the growing concern for senior citizens there are phone help lines for senior citizens as well.

“Senior citizens may not be aware that they can get ‘senior citizen I-Card’ which can be beneficial in various aspects like travelling, income tax, bank interest rate,” says Indu Lal, one of the volunteers with Shree Manav Seva Sangh.

Shree Manav Seva Sangh is a non-profit organisation has been give serving people since 1924. The various needs that they cater to range from an adoption centre, child guidance centre, day care centre, home for senior citizens, vocational training centre, medical centre, and autistic centre. On World Elders Day, in 2004 they decided to launch the helpline.

Indu Lal further elaborates, “The helpline is more than just a service to heed their problems or hear them out. We assist them with any legal hassles or medical problem that they face and provide them with information about any kind of official or government work they to get done.”

The organisation which is now has focusing on making the lives of elderly simple started with humble beginnings. It was initiated by a clerk, peon and compounder of J.J. Hospital. Now numbers of people are involved for giving the service to senior citizens that is a non-profit organisation.

Besides the helpline service to the senior citizens they have accommodation and other facilities for the senior citizens who need some one to look after them. The people here are not necessarily those who have been abondened by their families. Despite having their own home many of them come here as they just enjoy being with people of their own age. It's a pleasant site to go and see how the organisation takes care of little needs of the elderly there. Everything from food, water, medicine is looked after by the attendants present there.

“The basic aim of the guideline is to ease their difficulties without disclosing their privacy. Sometimes they have queries that we can't address directly so we connect with other resourceful organisation that can guide the, correctly,” adds Vinita Joshi, a social worker with the organisation.
