Are you game for Mumbai university's new plan?

Mumbai University has added two more sports disciplines to the list of its zonal and inter-zonal tournaments. Students say the move will boost sports among youngsters.

Are you game for Mumbai university's new plan?

It’s important that students know about various sports but I think today we focus only on glamourous sport. For instance, when Viswanathan Anand won the World Chess Championship we were crying over Indian cricket team’s exit from World T20 Championship. More awareness and sponsorship need to be created to boost various sports.

It’s good to see that our varsity is encouraging sports like fencing, archery, chess etc. In a cricket frenzy country other sports have are ignored but if colleges and university encourages them then we can see stars in other sports as well. But I do think that sportsperson should be kept away from limelight so that it doesn’t affect their game.

This is a small initiative from the government who make tall claims about promoting sports but in reality many sports are still the same where they were 50 years back. When we talk of sports in India the first thing which comes to our mind is cricket, which is wrong. Should play a sport as keeps one fit.

In schools, students get to play a lot of sports but as one enters college it takes a back seat. If the university encourages and has a lot of inter-collegiate tournaments then it will not only give a boost to various sports but will also help build a sporting spirit among students. Youngsters need to take interest in  sports.      —Nihal Daswani, HR College

It is a good effort by the government to boost sports. We can’t have better examples than Saina Nehwal, Abhinav Bindra, Vijender Singh whose achievements have made us proud. To improve the condition and popularity of various sports, supervision is important. Better facility, training support and faith on players is required.
