American dream steals Shanghai thunder

LET'S TALK

The Shivaji statue, it is said, promotes tourism. A city with bad roads, flooding streets and rampaging policemen debates its utility.

The Chief Minister and Pramod Navalkar say the memorial will serve as an inspiration to youth. They must know that youth need proper education and basic facilities, not statues.

First, develop Mumbai like New York and then contemplate building a statue in the sea. Secondly, why use hard-earned tax money for such inane uses? — Shailesh Nuggu /Borivali

I don't see this project happening. The govt. should spend on improving infrastructure. Improve the pathetic municipal hospitals for one.
- Kushal Patil /Palgar

I agree, but Rs 100 crore is too much. Half the money goes in the pockets of ministers and bureaucrats. If I had to allot so much money, I would improve infrastructure and redo roads.
- Ganesh B/ Lalbaug

Spending Rs 100 crore on this is ridiculous, but what do you expect of our politicians? They say it will boost tourism, but they could have built a plush hotel or amusement park.
- Santosh Bhujbal / Dombivali

Where's the need? If the govt has so much money, give tax concessions to the middle class. The money could be used to run population control programmes, develop infrastructure, etc
- Amrish Jadhav /Lalbaug

Clearly, the govt has lost sight of its priorities. Why do we imitate the West? There are other less expensive ways of promoting tourism.
- Amol G /Nagpur

Shivaji Maharaj was a great warrior and Iwonder if he would have approved of something like this, especially at the cost of the common man.
