In a recent global perception survey conducted by TrustLaw (www.trust.orgtrustlaw) 213 gender experts from five continents were asked to rank countries by their overall perception based on health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, cultural or religious factors, lack of access to resources and trafficking as they perceived the overall danger in those countries.

Afghanistan was first on the list besides other factors due to the terror activities rampant in the country, while Congo, Africa’s blood diamond hub was second. Pakistan ranked third, the recent killings of terrorist in the country may have led to this rank besides other factors. India was fourth due to the high female foeticide, child marriage and trafficking figures according to the survey. Also the recent rape cases coming to the fore in the capital add to the unsafe factor. Somalia, the country whose pirates have wrecked havoc in the Indian Ocean and known to have common occurrence of genocides was fifth on the list.

Do you feel that women in India are unsafe and that the country has been rightly placed on the list? Is India really worse than Somalia when it comes to safety of women?
