Watch: How Microsoft will be using HoloLens to up their VR game

The market is ripe and full of all sorts of possibilities for Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). While all the tech giants are dabbling in this space to have a piece of the pie, Microsoft is fairly new.

However, Microsoft might just get an edge over its competitors with their work that incorporates Microsoft's AR, which is the HoloLens, with the VR.

Initially, Microsoft had unveiled AR with the Windows Holographic platform, primarily for app developers.

In a release by Windows on Wednesday, they have opened up the platform for other developers to design VR headsets that are compatible to HoloLens.

Along with the release, Microsoft shared a video of what it would be like to be connected via AR and VR - which is what they are calling mixed reality.

It shows some of the architect come together to design a retail space. It's a futuristic description of what it would be like to be using mixed reality - with Minority Report-like hand gestures for controlling holograms of objects that would be in the room. The architect could also connect with her colleagues via HoloLens who helped her design the space, remotely.

This technology would open up doors for new possibilities for communication, gaming, design and architecture, to name a few.

Have a look at how the not-so-distant future might look like.
