Reliance Foundation launches first Hindi magazine in Braille

The country's first national Hindi periodical in the Braille script was launched on Monday in Mumbai

Reliance Drishti, a fortnightly, was launched by corporate czar Mukesh Ambani's wife Nita, who heads the Reliance Foundation, which is funding the venture.

Ambani said, the magazine, edited by Swagat Thorat, will be distributed for free through 320 institutions nationally and will have a readership of 20,000 people.

Thorat has been coming out with a periodical in Marathi titled 'Swapnasparsha' for the blind, since the past four years.

Calling any sort of information divide as "unacceptable" in today's times of progress in science and technology, Ambani said, the magazine will strive to bridge this gap.

Thorat said, 30% of the space in the magazine will be devoted to news, while the rest will constitute detailed pieces on varied topics written exclusively for visually-handicapped readers of Reliance Drishti.

He said, there were 82,222 newspapers and periodicals registered with the Registrar of Newspapers, but this is the first national initiative for the visually-impaired.

Ambani said, her foundation has been associated with the cause of visually impaired since 2003 and has funded over 10,000 successful corneal graftings till now.
