Mobile apps that could zap you!

At a workshop in NID, students designed novel gadgets putting mobile internet to good use.

Mobile apps that could zap you!

Devices to count mosquitoes, measure carbon emission and
locate autos!

These are three product design concepts from around 200 innovative ideas which National Institute of Design (NID) students came up with recently.

A bunch of around 15 students from the undergraduate batch of product design thought of these innovative designs during a two-week workshop 'PhysicalApps India' to discuss physical applications. The workshop was headed by Dr Jon Rogers with a team of four from University of Dundee, Scotland.

The other four members of his team were Mike Shorter, Tom Metciofa. Larrisi Pschetz and Steven Birnie. Dr Rogers said the idea was to explore a range of digital economy projects.

"The main focus is on coming up with gadgets that could popularise mobile internet. People can access internet through personal computers and laptops but it is expensive. Since most people, even in rural parts of India, use mobile phones, devices and data that could be used through mobile internet is the focus of the workshop," said Dr Rogers.

Rogers reiterated that the aim of the workshop was to come up with social innovations, crafts and interactive designs.

One of the students, Prays Rokde, said: "We have come up with different kinds of digital economy projects. At the end of the workshop, we will design four most feasible gadgets that could boost mobile internet use."

Mosquito detector
A small box attached to a tall pole  is designed to count the number of mosquitoes in an area. The data collected will be directly sent to a team to upload on a website. It will then be available on mobile internet. The device would be of great help to civic bodies to tackle mosquito menace.

Measuring emissions
At a time when everyone is talking about reducing carbon emission, this small, novel equipment fitted in a vehicle could give an estimate of emission. Details of emissions from   vehicles in an area could be gathered and uploaded on a website.

Auto on call
A small device is fitted in one's cell phone and auto-rickshaws. The device helps in locating an auto in a nearby area and also finds out if it is available using a phone. An auto driver can also locate a passenger using the device.
