Apple March 21 event: iPhone SE, smaller iPad Pro, and more

Tim Cook back on stage. "This is probably the last product introduction in the Town Hall you're sitting in today." AHA. Now THIS is definitely about the Apple Campus 2.

These will also be available March 31.  Meanwhile, prices for the old iPads are slashed. iPad Mini starts at $269, iPad Air 2 will start at US $399. 

They have a 32GB version for US $599, 128GB for US $749, and 256GB version for US $899

5MP FaceTime camera. Available in silver, gold, space grey and rose gold

12MP camera in the new iPad Pro. Same Focus Pixels and True Tone flash. Live Photos and 4K shooting.

Ok this actually makes sense. There's new lightning connectors for an SD card reader and USB Camera Adapter. More than a little late, but at least they got there.

There's a special Apple Keyboard for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. It also supports the Apple Pencil. 

Phil Schiller says, Apple Pencil is "The greatest accessory Apple has ever made." Oh wait......he's serious. If only Jobs could hear this now.

Apparently the A9X is Finfet. That means chips are stacked on e on to pof the other, as opposed to spread out across the board.

It has the Pro Audio setup. 4 speakers working in stereo. It also has a new, faster, A9X chip

The new iPad Pro also works with Night Shift. It also has what they're calling a "true tone display". It measures the colour temperature of the ambient light and adjusts the display accordingly.

The iPad Pro has a Oxide TFT display with a wider colour gamut. 25 percent more saturation than the iPad Air 2.

"There's a second group of people we'd love to reach with this new iPad Pro. Windows Users. The majority of people coming to iPad Pro come from Windows." Say what? Shots fired.

He's talking about a "new iPad Pro based around a 9.7 inch Retina display." It weighs less than a pound, he says (that's less than half a kilo).

"We're going to start the price of the iPhone SE at US $399." That's US $17 a month for the payment plans available in the US. Orders start March 24, and the phone will be available March 31. It'll ship first in the US, Australia among others.

It's got the A9 processor from the from the 6S, with the embedded M9 coprocessor. 

Looks like all the usual colours, including Rose Gold. 

It's official, the new device is the iPhone SE. it's 4-inch, and looks just like the iPhone 5S.

AHA. Finally on to the new iPhone. Greg Joswiak, head of Apple's iOS and iPhone division is up. 

"We're here today to talk about a smaller iPhone."

Folders are also incoming, and voice dictation to enter text, including usernames and passwords.

There's a new free update for the APple TV. "Now you can access your entire iCloud photo library, including live photos."

That is quite a significant price drop on the Apple Watch however, and Cook just dropped that news on us and moved right along. That's out of sync with past experience.

And that's it for the watch. On to the Apple TV already. Looks like this might not be a long event after all, thankfully. It's hard to get excited about "woven nylon".

There's a new Black Milanese loop. The Apple Watch price has also been slashed from US $399 to US $299.

Cook: Since we launched it less than a year ago, the Apple Watch has become the top-selling smartwatch in the world. 

They're launching new colours, and a new woven nylon band.

Another CareKit app being developed with Texas Medical Centre is for post-surgery recovery. It provides you a checklist of things to do, like reviewing your symptoms, and taking measurements. You can then share it with your loved ones.

William's: "Today we're launching CareKit" 

Where ResearchKit helps study medical conditions, CareKit aims to help patients improve their care. The first CareKit app being launched is for Parkinson's patients

ResearchKit developers are working on apps to study Parkinson's, Autism, diabetes. Apparently there's an app that analyses health data to predict seizures.

Now it's Jeff William's turn, Apple's COO. He's been the face of the Apple Watch through development. He's talking about progress on ResearchKit, which lets researchers gather data from its devices.

Jackson is now talking about Apple Renew, for users to recycle their old devices.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives up on stage now. She's talking about Apple's commitment to renewable energy. Is this leading up to a sneak peek at the new headquarters?

Cook is talking about encryption right off the bat. Looks like he's taking the opportunity to reiterate the company stand.

"We built the iPhone for you, our customers, and we know it is a deeply personal device. We need to decide, as a nation, how much power the governement should have over our data and our privacy."

Tim Cook: There are now more than 1 billion Apple devices in use. With that, comes a significant responsibility.
