In an exclusive interview, Peter Chang, South Asia region head and country manager of system business group ASUS India, speaks to Krishna Bahirwani on where ROG is headed.

How important is gaming as a segment to Asus?

For years since its establishment, ASUS aimed to put an ever-greater emphasis on PC gaming. This process resulted in the 2006 founding of the Republic of Gamers brand (ROG), formed for the sole purpose of delivering the most innovative hardcore hardware for truly dedicated gamers. As a hardware vendor that is in tune with the pulse of PC gamers' need and wants, ASUS is in sync with the industry. With the ASUS ROG brand, we take an active part in the global gaming community and want to replicate our success in India as well. Keeping in mind the increasing passion and trend of gaming among individuals, for 2016, Gaming will be one of our key focus areas and providing gaming hardware to all the enthusiasts, right from entry level to professional gamers will be our target.

How much market share are you targeting in the Gaming Laptops segment?

ROG is the no. 1 gaming laptop brand worldwide. For 8 straight years, ASUS has been the world champion for gaming laptops. Ruling over 34% market share as per January 2015 data according to Gfk, ASUS is unbeatablein the GTX market share. The numbers are growing and it proves that ASUS ROG is one of the major brands in gaming industry. With such innovation and a constant eye on the market, we aim to be the top in India as well.

Are there big plans for ROG in 2016?

With the advent of Skylake, there are many products lined up for 2016. We recently launched the GL552JX with 4GB GUI. You will see many of our flagship gaming models being launched in the 1H of 2016 with Skylake processors and advanced graphics.

What are your plans with availability and Asus exclusive stores?

We are always on a lookout for opportunities to increase our brand presence in the country to be able to provide a rich technology experience for the end users. So we will look at aggressive expansion in Tier 1 and 2 cities in 2016.

Will we see more events like ROG Meetup in 2016?

Answer: - In 2016, you will see a lot of such initiatives from Asus especially for the end users / gaming enthusiasts.

Where do you see the gaming industry going in 2016?

The Indian gaming industry is worth approx. USD 890 million and has crossed an inflection point. With experience outsourcing, QA testing and developing products combined with availability of creative talent, advanced technology and the low-cost factor, Indian markets provide the best opportunity for collaboration and development work. With a huge skill base across IT, testing and art design, the future of the gaming industry in the country looks bright in the years to come.
