Four women’s colleges in Kanpur – Dayanand Degree College, Acharya Narendra Dev College, Sen Balika College and Johari Degree College – all affiliated to Kanpur University, have prohibited students from wearing jeans on campus after a recent meeting, claiming this will check eve-teasing.
“When the college shuts, boys throng the gates. They often indulge in uncouth behaviour, particularly with girls wearing body-hugging jeans,” Dayanand Degree College principal Meeta Jamal said. “After receiving several complaints of eve-teasing, we decided to ban students from wearing jeans on campus.”
College authorities are planning a dress code for students next, but students are unhappy. “The decision taken by the college authorities is illogical. If they want to check eve-teasing, they must approach the police,” said Shweta Chaturvedi, a BSc student at Dayanand Degree College.
Do you think this is the way to curb harassment? Or should the law deal with the thugs?
