Scent of a woman

In an exclusive chat with DNA, Italian stunner Monica Bellucci speaks about her films, family and fashion.

Scent of a woman

You were supposed to play Sonia Gandhi in an Indian film...what happened?
Unfortunately the project could not go through for many reasons.

Some of your other films like Irreversible and The Passion have been controversial as well…
It is normal that a controversial movie makes people react. I think it is normal and healthy when a movie can shock by its violence, or interpretation of history. I am an actress, I invest myself, but when I interpret a part, I see it as a part to do and that is what a director expects from an actor. It doesn’t mean I agree or disagree with what I play.

Which of your movies is closest to your heart?
Two of them. The first is L’appartement, a French film. My personal life changed after this since I met my husband eleven years ago during this movie, and we have been together ever since. Then there is Malena, with the great Italian director Guiseppe Tornatorre. He gave me a lead part, in a very Italian movie, like the ones which made me dream when I was young.

What projects are you currently involved in?
I have just finished  an American film in New York by Rebecca Miller called The Private Life of Pippa Lee with Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Robin Wright Penn. I will also be promoting a new French movie which I’ve just finished filming called Ne Te Retourne Pas by Marina de Van with Sophie Marceau.

How does it feel to be considered one of the most beautiful women in the world?
I am confident of myself not because I am beautiful, as most people say, but because the feeling within me of being happy with what I am doing, being loved and having a beautiful family. A woman is only beautiful if she knows how to use her beauty in a positive way.

How do you manage to stay fit?
I exercise and eat moderately, but I don't overdo it. When I get the chance, I like to swim.

How would you describe your personal style?
I like to wear simple dresses with simple colours and I like to wear black, and finish the outfit with Cartier jewellery. My favorite designers are John Galliano for Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and Azzedine Alaia.

Your daughter has an Indian name, Deva. Have you ever been to India?
Definitely, the symbolic meaning and the name Deva has totally inspired me, even though I have no ties with your country, but definitely a certain attraction. I think that Indian women are beautiful, sensitive and very feminine; I love Indian food; it is delicious and spicy. I haven't had the chance to go to India yet, but I know it is one of the countries that attracts me and I want to visit it very soon.
