Based on John Bingham’s book Five Roundabouts to Heaven, this film with screenplay and direction by Ira Sachs, is an indecisive period domestic drama which never really amounts to anything much. There is quite a bit of emotion in the story itself, that could have been tapped but Sachs’ treatment is so restrained and the tone oh-so, matter-of-fact that it leaves no room for the expression of high emotion.

There’s room for serious comedy and psychological thrills but neither make it to the fore. Really, even Bingham’s pulp-novel was not meant to be adapted as a noir thriller or a sly marital fable. After all it’s just about ageing Romeos. Nothing new there.
