Partition
Cast: Jimi Mistry, Kristin Kreuk, Neve Campbell
Director: Vic Sarin
Rating: *1/2

A Canadian film that is curiously similar to a Bollywood hit — the basic plot of Partition  matches Gadar-Ek Prem Katha —  minus the jingoism, the songs, the passion, heavy-duty melodrama and with a  few minor cosmetic changes.

Gyan Singh, a Sikh, resigns from the British army to a quiet life of a farmer in Punjab. But his comrades' thirst for revenge leads to a massacre of a caravan of muslims fleeing to Pakistan. A young girl Naseem flees straight into the mustard fields tended by Gyan Singh.

Gyan takes responsibility for her and eventually marries her. In time, Naseem's search for her family eventually leads her to Pakistan after which Sikh-Muslim hatred comes to the fore, putting to the test, the strength of their love for each other.

Vic Sarin's narrative is placid and devoid of drama despite there being ample scope for it.

There are also far too many peripheral characters in the plot who are left underdeveloped and appear like caricatures. This is a film devoid of depth and intelligence.
