‘I am happy with my contribution in ICL’

Rana Naved Ul Hasan, who was known for his bowling, has been a revelation as an all-rounder

AHMEDABAD: You have rediscovered yourself as an all-rounder in T20 and especially ICL.
I started my career as an all-rounder. But unfortunately, while representing the country,

I used to replace Mohammad Sami or Shoaib Akhtar in the playing eleven. So I batted right at the end which prevented me from showing my batting skills. But for Lahore Badshahs, when Inzy bhai (Captain Inzamam ul-Haq) handed me the role of a pinch hitter, I readily accepted. And it clicked.

This ICL season has been a boon for you.
I am happy with my performance because I contributed with bat and ball. My performance against Chandigarh Lions (50 runs and three wickets) was special. That win changed the complexion of our game. After trailing suddenly we became one of the favourites.

What does the future hold for you considering PCB is yet to lift the ban?
There is news that they (Pakistan Cricket Board) are mulling over lifting the ban. Sri Lanka board has already done it. I also believe we have five to six cricketers who are still fit to play for the country and add value to the current national team. It will be very good move for cricket and players.

Mohammad Asif is likely to join ICL. Your comments…
He is very good cricketer. I think he gets caught in unnecessary controversies. The board should have handled his case with care. Such attitude (of the PCB officials) has made many players insecure.

Is that why you joined ICL?
After the World Cup disaster, eight players were sacked from the national team, including me. And then, despite doing well in domestic season and in English County, I was neglected. When I asked them the reason, nobody paid attention to my query. I have family to feed. So when ICL gave me the offer, I accepted it.

Is the current situation in Pakistan a bit of a problem?
Of course. If international teams don’t tour then how will the domestic players benefit. Moreover, Pakistan has hardly played any Tests in last year. It is very unfortunate. I just hope the situation will improve.

India-Pakistan series is not exciting any more…
Earlier, relations between the  two countries were strained. But in the last four years it has improved and both are talking peace which has resulted in a few bilateral series. This may be the reason it has lost the sheen. Now, the same tension is seen when India plays Australia.

Toughest batsman you faced in your career…
Brian Lara, by far. Nobody comes near him.
