It’s getting staid and predictable, the producers have lost the plot

We are into the seventh season of American Idol, but the talent seems to have diminished, and the show is falling into a predictable format. And what’s with the producers trying new things that are simply doing nothing for the reality show which was once a prime-time heavy-weight?

For instance, this season, the stage became bigger; they allowed contestants to use instruments if they wanted; there was more space for the band; they even added new sofas for the contestants who were ‘safe’; and introduced a pageantry feel with the contestants always coming out in pairs or waiting with baited breathe behind the wings, as their fate was decided by the rest of the world.

For a show that has produced stars of the calibre of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, the producers have just not been able to find equivalent talent for the last two to three seasons. Are they suffering from Idol fatigue?

Now, if you are a regular viewer, you can more or less predict who the two finalists are going to be by the second or third week. That’s how good the talent is! You also know that a person with the best voice is more often that not going to win the show. Take for example Season 5 with Taylor Hicks winning the show, even though fellow finalist Katherine McPhee was better than him. And what about Chris Daughtry, who in my opinion, was very good?

Likewise, in Season 6, the final three were Melinda DoLittle, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis. Now, it was almost a sure bet that it was going to be a Melinda and Jordin final, but as the voting goes it was a Jordin-Blake final with Blake being no match for Jordin.

The only thing that is constantly entertaining is Simon Cowell - he gives the most honest and straight forward comments of the three judges. Paula is there to encourage the contestants and act as the resident glamour queen, and well … Randy… it makes no difference if he is around or not.

American Idol is no longer the show it used to be when it started, and if they want to retain their diehard fans they have to bring back contestants who can sing so that the show can go back to what it originally was - a singing competition.
