BHUBANESWAR: In a unique beauty contest, a competition was held here for cows and buffaloes, with nearly 300 people turning up to watch the bovines go through their paces.

No ramp was erected for the show Friday evening, but the area in front of the NABARD office was barricaded lest the "beauties" run away.

The animals were accorded "most beautiful", "beautiful" and "pretty" tags by the judges, comprised of veterinary doctors and milkmen. The competition was organised by a city-based organisation.

The competition was held in three categories - lactating cows, calves and buffaloes of different breeds. Hybrids were also allowed to take part.

Radha, a three-year-old calf, was crowned the "most beautiful" while Sita, aged eight, won the first prize in the lactating cow category.

A "seasoned cow boy" was also honoured on the occasion.

The organising secretary of the show, Sanatan Behera, a milkman, said they had been organising the "cow worship and exhibitions" for the last 10 years, but it was for the first time they decided to hold a beauty pageant for cows.
