TEHRAN: Iran has launched a women-only taxi agency in south Tehran for passengers who want safer rides in a city where men and women are often squeezed in together in shared cabs, a report said on Wednesday.

The Ladies' Safe Trips taxi service was launched "at the request of Tehran women asking for a safe and relaxed service," municipality transport official, Jafar Tashakori Hashemi, told the semi-official Mehr news agency.

Female passengers can call the company from 6 am to 10 pm for a green Kia cab driven by "professional and experienced women" and equipped with GPS navigation systems.

"We hope the ladies employed at the taxi company display their capabilities in social activities by respecting Islamic values," he said.

Passengers in the Islamic republic travel in segregated buses, with women sitting in the back, but they share taxis with three people squeezed together on the back seat.

Women can choose between female-only and mixed wagons on subway trains.
