The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to send students of municipal schools for training to the sub-centre of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Muktangan Exploratory Science Centre (MESC) that was started recently at Nigdi.

The civic body aims to develop scientific temperament among the students of municipal schools and will bear the fees.

The Women and Child Welfare Committee of the civic body had tabled a proposal to allocate Rs3 lakh to meet the expenditure before the standing committee. The standing committee has now given its nod to the proposal. The civic body plans to extend the benefit of the scheme to nearly 90 students of standard V to VII.

The exploratory, set up at the Jnana Prabodhini High School, Nigdi on 2,500 sq feet land on August 1, is the first science exploratory in the twin township.

Civic chief Shrikar Pardeshi, who recently started coaching centres for competitive exams at municipal schools, also wants to develop the scientific temperament among the children at an early age.

PCMC education board officer Vishnu Jadhav said, “The training will help municipal students to appear at various national-level examinations also.”

He added that the training will be provided once a week at MESC for one-and-a-half hour.

MESC has seven labs for physics, chemistry, biology, electronics, maths, earth sciences and computers. The fees for standard V and VI students is Rs3,000 per year while for standard VII to IX students, it is Rs4,000.
