Raze illegal slums: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation(PCMC) corporators

Cutting across party lines, corporators of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have demanded strict action against illegal slums that are consistently mushrooming in various parts of the twin town.

They have attributed the rising crime in the area to these shanties.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Jitendra Nanaware and Shiv Sena counterpart Seema Savale said, “Our ward falls in slum area at Balajinagar, Phulenagar at MIDC area of Bhosari. Residents of illegal slums have been indulging in committing thefts in the nearby industrial estate. Slumlords have already started the business of renting out huts, but the civic officials are not taking any action.”

Nanaware said, “PCMC received the ‘Best City Award’ of Central government but growth of illegal slums and increasing crime rate will hamper its development. If the civic administration fails to check the growth of illegal slums, the project of 24x7 water supply will be in jeopardy.”

Corporator Zama Barne said, “It is ridiculous on the part of the civic staff to demolish houses of residents but ignore unauthorised slums.”
