PMPML’s ladies-only bus service rolls out today

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is launching a special bus service for women on three routes from Thursday.

The transport body had tried to introduce the special bus service for women a few years ago, but it failed due to low response. Learning a lesson from its earlier attempt, the PMPML authorities have now decided to allow school students to board these buses to get maximum revenue from the service.

Sunil Gawali, traffic manager of the PMPML, said, “Earlier, there was not much of revenue generation from the special bus service for women. Therefore, this time we have decided to allow schoolchildren on the buses, so that we get additional revenue by issuing tickets to school students along with women passengers.”

The bus service will start at 4.30 pm from Swargate bus depot on Thursday. Initially, the bus will operate on Hadapsar-Swargate, Katraj-Swargate and Dhayari-Swargate routes. The PMPML authorities also informed that the conductors for these buses will also be women.

Earlier, when Rajlaxmi Bhosale was the mayor, she had taken the initiative to start a bus service dedicated to women. However, later the transport body suspended the service citing financial losses.
