Pimpri-Chinchwad firms to undertake block closure

Two major industrial units in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Tata Motors Limited and Sandvik Asia Limited, have decided to halt production at their plants in the twin town for a few days.

While Tata Motors has declared a block closure between December 24 and 26, Sandvik Asia Ltd, a leading manufacturer of cutting tools, mining and construction equipment, will keep its unit closed from December 7 to 15.

An official statement from Sandvik Asia Ltd, Dapodi, stated, “The decision has been taken to reduce the workload in some of the production sections. Hence, in line with the agreement with our registered and recognised union, those areas will remain closed from December 7-15, 2012. The closure does not impact wages/salary and leave entitlements of the employees participating in the closure.”

Debasis Ray, head (corporate communication), Tata Motors, told DNA, “The commercial vehicle plant in Pune will observe a block closure from December 24-26 to align production with demand.”

Earlier, the automobile major had announced a block closure in June for the same purpose.

Nearly, 6,345 workers and 3,500 officers work in the department where block closure has been declared. The company has also sent a letter to the Tata Motors Employees Union in this regard.
