Pavana dam 95.26% full

PCMC to release water only if there are heavy rains.

Pavana dam 95.26% full

Pavana dam reached 95.26% of its storage capacity on Thursday, thanks to the intermittent spells of rain in the catchment areas over the last six days.

The catchment area of Pavana dam received 55mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The rainfall for this season  is 3,115 mm rainfall, said PCMC disaster management cell chief Omprakash Bahiwal.

“Though the water level has risen, there is no plan of releasing water from Pavana dam. We might release water only if there are heavy rains,” said Bahiwal.

Civic officials added that water will be released during Ganeshotsav to facilitate immersion of idols.

Meanwhile, alert has been sounded in the low-lying areas of Sangvi and Wakad after 10,000 cusecs of water was released from Mulshi dam on Wednesday.

Bahiwal added, “We have inspected the low-lying areas in the morning and there is no need to worry. Only about 15 slums in Sangvi and Wakad areas have been shifted as a precautionary measure.”
