MPCB slaps Rs12,000 fine on PCMC

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) attracted a fine of Rs12,000 and licence renewal fees of Rs60,000 for non-renewal of licence to run Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) for the past four years.

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has asked the civic body to pay the penalty. PCMC had started its CBWTF at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Sant Tukaramnagar area of Pimpri in 2006.

The civic body had made it mandatory for all healthcare establishments in the city to become a member of CBWTF. Civic officials said that nearly 600 kg biomedical waste generated by the over 5,000 healthcare establishments in the twin township is disposed of at the CBWTF daily.

PCMC appointed Pasco Solution to run the CBWTF. However, the civic body has to renew the licence to run the facility every year. Earlier, the environment department of PCMC renewed the licence. However, the civic administration didn’t do it for four years and received the MPCB notice.

MPCB charges licence renewal fees of Rs15,000 per year and non-renewal attracts a fine of Rs3,000 per year. After the notice, PCMC will renew the licence till 2014. A proposal tabled before standing committee to sanction Rs1.12 lakh to run the facility was approved on Tuesday.
