Moms-to-be take ‘womb tuitions’ for little Abhimanyus

A Pimple Gurav resident, Tanya Soni, was five months pregnant when a fellow mother-to-be at the ante-natal classes she attended introduced her to the concept of ‘womb tuitions’.

“The ante-natal classes taught us breathing exercises and prepared us for labour and delivery. But womb tuitions is about developing the unborn child’s intellect. Just like Abhimanyu learnt war skills in his mother’s womb, science has proved that an unborn child has a high intellect that can be lost, if not utilised,” said the software engineer.

A few calls later, Soni landed up with reading material and CDs on how to develop the baby’s intellect.

Soni isn’t an isolated case; driven by the desire for little Abhimanyus, a growing number of parents are enrolling for womb tuitions offered by firms, schools and doctors.

A Chennai-based company, Little Gems, claims that children delivered after receiving their training can speak multiple languages and are able to do “computer-like calculations”.

Managing director of Little Gems, Vijay Bhaskaran, said the programme had lots of takers in Pune too.

He said 50,000 mothers have benefitted from Little Gems so  far. Little Gems was founded by his mother, Revathi Shankaran.

“Of our brain, 5/6th develops before 5 years of age. During this period, the right side of the brain — associated with creativity, intuition and spirituality — is dominant. Our programme enhances development of the right brain,” he said.

Kharadi-based Victorious Kidss Educares, an authorised world IB (International Baccalaureate) school, has been propagating the concept of womb tuitions. The school accepts admissions of children as young as six weeks old.

“Women undertake activities like yoga, meditation and attend classes for babies six weeks old. The sessions focus on developing the child’s IQ. An unborn or just born child has a higher intelligence than adults.  If we stimulate the mind well during pregnancy, neurons get connected faster after birth. The more the links, the higher the IQ,” said Robbin Ghosh, chairman of the school.

The programmes are based on the premise that nine months of gestation permanently influences wiring of the brain and decides how babies turn out in life later.

Gynaecologist Dr Mandar Ranade organises Garbhsanskar classes for pregnant women. “A child can pick up several languages, but learning a new language is difficult for adults. Even if a baby in the womb cannot be taught calculations, its overall personality can be developed, besides developing qualities like appreciation of art, music and inducing positive thoughts,” said Ranade.
