Dengue ‘stings’ twin township

The twin township of Pimpri and Chinchwad reported 13 dengue cases in September, bringing the total number of dengue cases this year to 33 so far. Two of these 33 patients succumbed to the disease.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) medical officer Dr Milind Jawale said, “September witnessed the highest number of dengue cases. The two deaths due to the disease have been reported in  June and September.”

According to PCMC records, most of the dengue cases were reported from Chinchwad, Walhekarwadi, Sangvi, Thergaon, Pimpri, Bhosari, Rahatni and Chikhali.

He added that despite attempts made by the civic body to spread awareness among citizens about diseases spread by mosquitoes, such cases have been reported.

Jawale added, “Storage of fresh water is risky as dengue mosquitoes breed in fresh water. Fresh water stored in vases, tyres, empty utensils etc may cause mosquito menace.”  He added that incessant rains, improper sanitation, ongoing road work and no control on mosquito breeding are some of the reasons for the spread of the disease.

Officials have warned that citizens should not take any fever lightly. High fever, joint and muscle pain, headache and rashes are symptoms of dengue and medical tests should be conducted if such symptoms are noticed. Besides, use of mosquito safety mats, mosquito repellents and pesticides is also useful, he added.
