Unnecessary hue and cry

Whether Sania wants to marry a Pakistani or an Alaskan is her personal choice. Why should others get excited about it?

Unnecessary hue and cry
One fails to understand the hue and cry over tennis star Sania Mirza’s decision to marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. Whether Sania wants to marry a Pakistani or an Alaskan is her personal choice. Why should others get excited about it? The media should not waste precious space in speculating about her wedding and its aftermath. We sincerely hope that in Pakistan she gets the same freedom she enjoyed in India.

The brave defenders
The Supreme Court (SC) has severely pulled up the Union government, especially the m0inistry of defence, for the shabby handling of the pension cases of the army men disabled during active service. The SC’s anger is understandable since the entire country is indebted to these brave soldiers who defend it from the enemy in inhospitable terrains like Siachen. The PM should make it mandatory for every minister in his cabinet and all the bureaucrats to visit, at least once, the areas, where our jawans risk their lives every minute so that we can enjoy the comfort of our offices and homes. It is then that they will realise the significance of what Winston Churchill said , “Never before in the history of human conflict have so many owed so much to so few”.

Food price crisis
The Opposition party chief asks why the prices of essentials are skyrocketing while godowns are overflowing with foodgrains (‘Gadkari asks PM to explain price rise’, DNA, April 2). Even if we take Gadkari’s statement with a pinch of salt, there has to be an element of truth in what he said. Rather than evading the issue, may we know why our rulers can’t spare some time to ascertain the facts and boldly take the corrective measures?

Effective externment
The news item ‘But was externment held up due to political clout?’ (DNA.Sunday, April 4) once again establishes the politician-criminal nexus. It is time an amendment be enacted to the relevant criminal laws. No cancellation of the externment should be permissible unless a valid court order is produced. Also, anyone requesting for cancellation of externment ordered by the police must furnish a surety bond to vouch for the future conduct of the externed person. In the event the externed person is subsequently found engaged in crime, just as Subhash Hiralal Bhosale was in the present case, the person standing as surety must be suitably punished. Such a provision will help check political recommendations for cancellation of externment.
