Hardly child’s play

Apropos ‘High anxiety’ (DNA.Sunday, November 26) — the competition in the present scenario plays a pivotal role in the growing  anxiety of parents. But parents should realise that the early years of childhood are very crucial. If a child at the tender age of three to five years is being prepared for preschool tuitions, what impact will it have on his mind? He will probably learn under pressure, but he would be stressed. True ability and performance comes naturally to a child. It is the aptitude which counts in the long run.

Bandra blues

It is very sad to note that the Parsi agiary on Hill Road, Bandra, has been included on the hit list of the BMC. The 122-year-old agiary, established by Ervad Nosherwanji Tata, should not be made a victim of the BMC’s plans for road widening (‘1,400 turn up to save agiary’, DNA, November 25). As residents of Mumbai, we cannot overlook the great work done by the Parsis. Also, as a former student of St Joseph’s Convent Girls’ High School, Bandra, I am disheartened to see that all the sacrifices the school and the St Peter’s parish have made for the beautification of Bandra are being totally overlooked by the BMC. I hope that the road widening in Bandra is done without forcing the Parsi aiary, St Peter’s Church and St Andrew’s Church to become scapegoats in the process.

Villain of the piece

Sanjay Dutt has been found guilty under the Arms Act and should be punished accordingly (‘Criticising Dutt verdict is not fair’, DNA, November 30). Despite his dubious record, the media is trying to make him a hero. The same media is insisting that Afzal Guru was not given a fair trial.

The recent acquittal of Sanjay Dutt was long-awaited relief not only for him and his colleagues, but all his fans as well. Dutt has been the scapegoat in many controversies. He has already spent 16 months in jail. Instead of making his life miserable, the court should attempt to convict the people who were really responsible for the 1993 bomb blasts. The role of the judiciary is not to create criminals, but to remove them from society.

Idol speculation

The desecration of statues by vandals, setting the country ablaze and arousing such reactions resulting in enormous losses of life and property has happened before on so many occasions (‘Yet another heritage structure is abused’, DNA, November 30). With due respect to all concerned, perhaps we should place all such monuments in a designated, notified area, where there is round-the-clock security.
