It needs to be contained in any which way we can: Kumar Sanjay Jha

Is there any provision in NDPS Act to register cases when Mephedrone (M-Cat) is seized?
To date, M-Cat does not figure in NDPS Act, So, it's difficult to register a case against someone caught possessing the drug. But something has to be done urgently as it's causing a lot of harm to the society.

Why does it find no mention in the Act?
This chemical drug is pretty new. It has no medicinal value, and hence it hadn't been heard of even in the medical field. Because of this to date there is no law against it in the NDPS Act.

How many have been caught with M-Cat to date?
It would be difficult to give an exact figure as we don't register case against a peddler caught with M-Cat for seizure of M-Cat.

We are told they are booked under poisonous substances Act. Do you think that will have the desired effect?
I have reservations about it. But I think it will act as a deterrent, as it would create fear in the minds of the people.

Has any proposal been sent to the central government to make M-Cat a schedule 1 NDPS drug?
We have already written to our headquarters and all authorities concerned in this regard. A law needs to be enacted to contain the sale and consumption of this drug. We are hopeful about a law being enacted soon. Many European countries have banned the drug, and America is thinking on those lines. I am sure the government of India will take all necessary step to eradicate this menace forever.
