Child labour should be banned completely: Kailash Satyarthi

What are the amendments you have sought for the Child Labour Act?
The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, needs to be revised. I have recently written a letter to all members of parliament urging them for a total ban on child employment. As of now, there is a ban only on employment of children up to 14 and that too in hazardous industries. There should be a complete ban on child labour and also this age should be increased to 18. Employing children in industries, shops or homes should be made illegal. I also had a talk with the prime minister in this regard and the response was very encouraging.

How can children be saved from sexual abuse?
Sexual abuse of children, especially girls, is unfortunately rampant world-wide. The predator most of the times is a known person or a relative. Laws alone can not curb this menace. People should raise voice and create awareness. Also, religious leaders should come forward and help society tackle this problem. Through their discourses or songs, they should take up this issue.

What can be done to better children's health?
Good health is every child's right, rich or poor. Not only government hospitals but private hospitals too should take a lead in treating poor children. Necessary health care should be made available to poor at an affordable or subsidised rate.

What is your take on government-run shelter homes for children?
They are indeed in a bad shape. The government should not only provide shelter, but proper education and rehabilitation facilities to children in such shelter-homes.

What all you want to do for children?
I have been working for children's rights in over 140 countries for last three decades. I dream for a world which is free of child labour, a world in which every child goes to school. A world in which every child gets his rights. The day we achieve this, it would be a red-letter day for me.
