Strong cause

It is observed that when the divorce by mutual consent or the above ground is not possible, the draconian Section 498A of IPC is used, wherein a simple complaint by a woman, without having even prima facie evidence, can land her husband and his relatives behind bars.

Strong cause

Strong cause
Apropos ‘Failed marriage alone can’t get one divorce : HC’, (August 8), the denial of divorce on grounds of irretrievable breakdown of marriage more often than not leads to misusing other laws, thereby defeating the whole purpose of the court’s decision. It is observed that when the divorce by mutual consent or the above ground is not possible, the draconian Section 498A of IPC is used, wherein a simple complaint by a woman, without having even prima facie evidence, can land her husband and his relatives behind bars. By the time these people are acquitted, the woman seeks divorce on grounds of cruelty which is easier to get once 498A is filed. After a gruelling battle, the husband usually accepts divorce on grounds of cruelty. It would be a respite to all concerned if ‘irretrievable breakdown’ is given due consideration as a strong ground for divorce.

United front
This is with reference to ‘Zak out, India feel the pain’, (August 8). Team India is already in panic mode as a result of the first two test matches but now team has to play like a unit, irrespective of the fact that a strike bowler missing from the squad. India needs to stand together in this crisis situation and hope for a miracle to salvage some pride in the remaining two tests.

Fight back, India
At a time when Team India could do with a dose of good luck, there doesn’t seem to be an end to their tumultuous times. The Numero Uno Test side has been comprehensively outplayed in the ongoing Test series by a well-organised English team. The fact that key players have been ruled out due to untimely injuries has added to our woes. The latest player to return home on account of injury is India’s pace spearhead Zaheer Khan. He maybe experienced, but his proclivity to break down midway through an important series is well documented. With Zak out of the scheme of things, one can only wonder how India’s depleted bowling will respond in the upcoming Tests.

Avoid accidents
It is surprising that over 1,227 people have lost their lives in accidents in the last 5 years in Ahmedabad. Poor traffic awareness is the main cause. People pay scant attention to traffic rules, especially those who drive two-wheelers. Also the traffic police should terminate the driving licences of the youth found speeding for a third time. Rash drivers should be penalised with fine and imprisonment. This will help curb road accidents.

More power
Apropos ‘Why not arm CAG with judicial powers’, (August 8), the writer has rightly advocated for giving suo moto powers to CAG to probe into scams instead of leaving it in the hands of powers that be. The national corruption watchdog has been able to zero in on financial irregularities and other misdeeds by the concerned agencies or people. By not taking cognisance of the findings of the CAG, talk of achieving zero-tolerance for corruption is just talk.

Apt slogan
The recent advertisement in the newspapers by the Western Railway authorities requesting the passengers to use railway bridges and subways with the caption ‘Zindagi milegi na dubara’, coinciding with the Bollywood film by the same name is a brilliant idea. The railways should prominently display this advertisement at all important stations and level crossings. Display of the advertisement should be done for the safety of the public after obtaining the necessary consent from the appropriate authorities.
